Climate Change

The Antarctic and Arctic ice sheets contain thousands of years of snow and ice and a sample of the gases in our atmosphere over time. When the ice and snow froze, many of the gases would be trapped and we can get an idea of relative concentrations. It is important for scientists to gain a better understanding of Earth’s past climate to better understand the changes occurring in our climate now. By identifying patterns we can better understand the natural and human influenced mechanisms that control our climate.

Polar bears have become a symbol of the arctic ecosystem. The polar bears require the ice sheet to begin hunting seals and many other arctic prey each year. When the formation of the ice sheet is late, they face starvation. Polar bears have adapted to the arctic and the cold ice sheets. Increasing melting sea ice is limiting the polar bears hunting habitat. They are also threatened by oil and gas development. The dangerous chemicals can poison them. The birth rate and infant survival rate of cubs has fallen.
