EU-Style Social Media Platform against Tech Bros?
Aktuell wird mit Wedium (https://wedium.social) ein neues „EU-Social Network“ angekündigt, das ohne Bots, Fake Accounts, Hass und Ragebait auskommen soll. Die Vision klingt gut – mir fehlt jedoch Transparenz zur Technologie, Governance und Umsetzung. Besonders spannend finde ich die Frage, warum wir über neue zentrale Web2-Plattformen sprechen, obwohl es bereits Web3-basierte Social Networks gibt. Mich interessiert eure Einschätzung.
EU-Style Social Media: Vision, Illusion, or a Real Alternative?
Over the last days I came across the announcement of a new “EU-style social network” called Wedium (https://wedium.social).
According to their website and LinkedIn communication, Wedium positions itself as a European alternative to existing platforms, promising:
- no fake accounts
- no bots
- no ragebait
- no hate or harassment
- hosted and built in Europe
- compliant with GDPR, DSA, youth protection laws
On a values level, this sounds appealing or at least interesting.
On a structural and technical level, I’m skeptical.
Big promises, little transparency
After reviewing the website, what stands out is not what is explained – but what is missing.
There is currently very limited information about:
- the underlying technology stack
- how identity and verification are handled
- moderation and governance mechanisms
- incentive structures and business model
- how claims like “no bots” or “no fake accounts” would actually be enforced
These are not minor details.
They are core design decisions that define how a social network behaves at scale.
Without this information, the claims remain aspirational rather than verifiable.
“European standards” are not a solution by themselves
Wedium strongly emphasizes “European standards” and regulation. GDPR and DSA are important, no doubt.
But regulation alone does not solve:
- algorithmic incentives
- attention and outrage economics
- echo chambers
- central moderation power
- platform lock-in
A social network is not just a legal framework.
It is governance, incentives, and infrastructure.
What puzzles me: Web3 social platforms already exist - I am writing on one
What I find particularly interesting is that there are already Web3-based social platforms experimenting with:
- transparent and open data layers
- community-driven governance
- reduced platform lock-in
- alternative incentive models
Hive and othera are far from perfect.
But they are at least structurally different from classic Web2 platforms.
This raises a key question for me:
Do we really want another centralized Web2 social network with an EU label –
or should Europe think more fundamentally about how social media is built and governed?
Not against the idea – against opacity
To be clear: this is not a dismissal of Wedium as a project.
Europe absolutely needs digital alternatives and sovereignty.
But trust is not created by values statements alone.
It comes from openness, architectural clarity, and verifiable governance models.
Until those are visible, skepticism feels reasonable.
Questions to the community
- Can an EU-hosted Web2 social network realistically fix today’s platform problems?
- What would “no bots” and “no fake accounts” require in practice?
- Should Europe invest more in Web3-style approaches instead of rebuilding Web2?
- What would make you trust a new social platform today?
Curious to hear different perspectives.
Who is behind this new social media platform? A for-profit entity?
It would seem like EU sponsored open source Web-3 platform would have been a better solution.
Good question - here a bit dicussion below their LI post in English - seems a private initiative - trying to find out more (many similar question on their posts asking). They seems to be GmbH so ltd:

wedium begins with “we” for a reason.
Yeah, it is not likely to succeed unless they have very deep pockets despite saying that they are not billionaires. And if they are privately held, everyone has a price so they can be bought. Love the cover image, what a bunch of ugly people at the Trump ceremony :)

Looks suspicious. Some person (with zero connection to the EU) wants people to believe he is a sort of a voice of the EU and to collect people's data "to keep bots and fake accounts out".
Think not really dangerous but doubt the potential - two of the founders work in the same marekting / ad agency and seem to position themselves as good humans, all from Berlin (no surprise) and wanto to protect the youth - it is for profit but no real background on tech, hosting, algo, monetarization etc. - also beta starting in March, slow. Adding yourself to waiting list: boring, and only with your ID you are eligible to join / contribute.

They got some media coverage from solid publications in Germany but i just see a nice try from Germans in Berlin, claiming it EU is a bit too much but we will see.

Hive can already claim not to be run just by US billionaires, even if some whales are there. We need to push it as an established and proven alternative with a strong European base.
I hadn't heard of Wedium. Not sure about the name, but then Hive is not ideal given the other things called that.
Hive as our brand was a major failure, Wedium might at least have some thinking behind but the approach is naiv unless they have huge investors in the making.
Hive as alternative would be good but when we talk web3, crypto must go away, I tried it so often on the main business network. NfT was a Huge vibe but gone

The problem is not the platform, but the people. Okay, yes, Facebook algorithm is annoying. But it's people not being able to handle opposing views, being lost and getting sucked into extreme thinking, creating their own bubbles. I listened to a Deutschlandfunk podcast a few weeks ago (or I read it in an article...) that "bubbles" are not as impactful as many people think. That the tendency to extremism is not an algorithmic problem, but a society one - individualism as fragmented us so much that we look for any kind of community. And the more extreme the views are, the closer and tighter the community is - us against the world.
Hence, I don't believe that a new platform will solve that. Something like Hive is ideal in my view - one can choose who to follow, and who to mute, but nobody gets banned or censored in a way that they can't post anything anymore.
