Generations Of Computer
There are currently 5 generations of computer, with each generation having a great improvement over the predecessor. I'm going to go through the first generation down to the fifth generation.
The first generation of computer;
These Computers were made and used from 1940s to 1950s, using vacuum tube technology. You may ask what a vacuum tube is. Well, a Vacuum tube is an electronic device that controls the flow of electrons in a vacuum (empty space).
Vacuum tube is used as an amplifier, a switch, or even as display screens in older computers.
The first generation computers were so big, yet they were so slow. They also consumed lots of power and as a result, generated lots of heat.
The second generation of computer;
This set of computers made use of a more advanced method for processing information. They were made solely on transistors,
which consumes less energy compared to the first generation of computers. They were also smaller in size compared to the first generation computers, and of course slightly faster than their predecessor. They were Invented and used within the 1950s to 1960s.
The third generation of computers;
This set of computers were made and used within the 1960s to 1970s. And consisted of integrated circuits(ICs), which made them way smaller in size compared to the first and second generation of computers.
This also made them cheaper and faster too.
The fourth generation of computers.
These computers were made and used (1970 - present ) shortly after the third generation of computers and some are still used till date.
Some of the characteristics of the fourth generation computers are the fact that they make use of high machine languages such as java, python, c# etc.
They also make use of micro processors. These systems though they weren't as slow as their predecessors they still weren't fast , and this brought about the emergence of the fifth generation computers.
The fifth generation of computer;
These computers have the ability to understand natural language, that is human language, they are also very portable in size and they have larger storage capacity. In terms of speed, these computers are way faster than the previous generations of computers.
I marveled at how the tech industry improved over the years. I was really surprised to see how large the first generations of computers were, and yet couldn't do as much as the current generation of computers. I tried comparing the first set of computers,
to the recent generation of computers
and found out that the disadvantages of the first generation computer were more than its advantages. This got me wondering how frustrating it could be to wait for days just for the computers to perform simple calculation tasks. Well a thousand miles they say begins with a step. As at 2016, the best windows pc at that time was running on the windows 10 operating system, while the latest android was running on android 7. With no doubt, comparing the windows 10 to Windows 1.0x( the first windows), the Windows 1.0x is no Match for the windows 10 but then little beginnings they say matter the most because the creation of the first windows, indirectly brought about the creation of the latest windows. These improvements over the years have affected so many things positively which I'm so happy about like the aviation sector,
the banking sector, and even the medical sector.
Well, while making some research some weeks ago, I found out that the windows 10 wasn't the most recent windows anymore the windows 11 has displaced windows 10 in terms of being the newest windows I also noticed that the widely known storage device for most computer systems which is the Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
is gradually being replaced by a newer technology called the Solid State Drive (SSD)
which is just better in all ramifications than the HDD. I was so surprised to see how improved the SSD was in size, speed and also durability. Even mobile devices aren't left out. as of now the latest android is operating on android 12. Wow what a great improvement over the years mobile devices are now able to perform much more complex tasks unlike before.
Picture quality
Most recent phones nowadays come with dual, triple or even quad rear cameras
thereby improving achievable picture quality of a smartphone.
The Internet speed
Well over the years, we have experienced improvements in terms of Internet speed, from E to 2g, to 3g, to 4g and now 5g, which is way faster than 4G, and can deliver up to 20 Gigabits-per-second.
Well I won't be surprised if more breathtaking inventions are made just five years from now, because as a matter of fact, the tech industry has been improving and gaining grounds really fast, of which I feel is a good thing, as it makes our work less strenuous, faster and even more accurate.
