GABA and the Gabaergic system. an introduction // GABA e o sistema Gabaergico. Uma introdução

It seems that ecency has some instability in uploading images here, but I'll risk posting anyway, in case the formatting gets bad, as soon as the system goes back to normal I'll try to update!

I'm going to talk today about a topic that is more complex than it appears to be: GABA. And maybe everything I say here is not only outdated but also limited, given that it's a theme that is in full expansion and updating. But above all, it's good to remember that a summary post for Hive shouldn't be taken as an academic article of incredible depth, because, honestly, not only am I not getting paid for it properly, but I also don't have as much time to study the topic as a specialist psychopharmacology student would have.

Starting with the basics, it can be said that GABA is the most vast neurotransmitter in our brain, it is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of every mammal and is totally linked to "excitability and aggression". It can be said that its most classic action is "sedation", but its actions can be either inhibitory or excitatory, depending on how they chemically act in our brain. Its composition and categorization is not so simple and like so many other transmitters, GABA has three classes: A, B and C.

Probably a simplification of the practical functions of GABA, but they serve for being didactic
Source

Given that each GABA class has its nuances and complexities and requires careful study to explain, I will divide this post into 3 future parts, each for their respective types A, B and C. That is, this is an introduction, just like I did with the posts about terpenes a few months ago. As with terpenes, posting this type of content is a formula for me to learn the content before being able to share it with the public, but I already anticipate that topics involving neurotransmitters tend to be much denser and more complex and seem to require a filter of understanding and transformation of terms to "facilitate" and lubricate understanding, but I will do my best for that.

I end this introductory text by talking about a classic topic when talking about GABA. The "Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid" supplement, known simply as GABA itself. Sold in many compounding pharmacies or supplementation websites, it is understood as a tool that would act directly fulfilling the GABAergic function in the brain, but apparently, many studies have been stating that this method of using GABA as a supplement unfortunately does not work well. . And the main reason for this is the fact that in this traditional formula the substance does not pass the blood-brain barrier (BBB), as with many substances. It may even be that this supplement, when ingested, brings some body relaxing benefit (most reports from users are of helping sleep), but if we are to think of gabaergic action as would occur with a medication specifically made for such a function, this does not happen. . Although, like everything else in science, this statement needs more proof and may be incorrect, with GABA in this formulation being a prescription-free supplement, maybe it's up to you reader, empirically, to do some testing and report it to us! And there is still the possibility that, perhaps through some alternative system the user can "hack" their blood-brain barrier through the use of an alternative substance that "opens doors". But in that sense I prefer not to even detail such techniques since they are experimental and maybe even risky (because if you make room for a substance X to enter your brain, what else could enter along with it?).

So for now, we are like this. Soon I will start the research and the text about GABA A. Thank you for reading and attention.
