Avoidant Personality Disorder // Transtorno de Personalidade Esquiva

In a less accurate look, one might think that Psychology has a tendency to be an inexact and extremely simplistic, subtle and lukewarm science, often inefficient. This is because we rarely find professionals engaged in delving deep enough into theories and practices, what we see are a bunch of post-students (mainly those of a past generation) who have been showered with too much of a psychology that is not at all deep and scientific yet much of what is now known to have high healing potential emerged decades ago. But I'm going all this way just to be able to bring an example of how psychology, despite being "simple" can be very efficient in understanding and dealing with certain problems, first of all by understanding them and classifying them with the correct diagnoses, which greatly facilitates the healing process throughout therapy.

For this I will talk about "Negative Reinforcement and the disorders of Escape and Avoidance". Firstly, it is important to understand that the concepts of using the "tools" of escape and avoidance are natural to the human being and we all act through such mechanisms, there is nothing wrong with it, however, like everything in life, we tend to imbalance and in certain behavioral patterns we often see a decompensation of certain patterns happen throughout our development, strengthening some, weakening others and so on. Escape behavior is a human's basic instinct when confronted with a situation that displeases him, and within that there can be a very wide range of details that unfortunately would not fit in a simple article like this. Perhaps your first confrontation with a situation of very loud noises, such as rockets and explosions, may have been too desperate and belatedly attended to to free yourself from the torturous moment, so the cognitive memory you will gain from this experience will be that rockets are generally horrible. , a kind of aggression. This first moment, even if late (if it took a while to "get out" of the situation, cover your ears, protect yourself, as a small child usually does when scared of a certain situation) it is a behavior of "Escape". . Sequentially, with the passing of lived experiences, we already have a "solidified" memory that explosions and fireworks in general are bad, desperate, or at least uncomfortable and unnecessary. The more time that passes, the more you can become autonomous in deciding not to have such experiences that are reinforced time after time as negative and then "Avoidance" behavior is obtained. Where you will no longer put yourself in a stressful situation with a theme that is already clear to your own subconscious (and conscious) as negative.

I used an example that was too simplistic, I could also use water as a great example and the bad experiences that children can have with water, both those that involve near drowning and those that involve only insecurity. Both can become classic Dodge behavior over the years. Another important detail: Not all avoidance behavior comes from childhood experiences, since many things we will only experience as we grow and become more mature and adults. So it's very common to see avoidance behavior involving avoidance of job interviews, sexual relationships, parties, public speaking, and so on. Some mechanisms are classic to identify an exacerbated "Avoidance" mechanism, when it has become not only an occasionally used tool but is linked to the person's disorder and ends up being constantly "activated", such as:

  • Daily use of alcohol or drugs
  • The state of being daydreaming daily
  • Isolation
  • Avoid "eye to eye" contact
  • Always speak in a low voice and inward
  • Make excuses for every possible event and party
  • procrastination
  • Do not answer calls or reply to messages
  • Avoid places at certain times and days

Source

I can argue in a self-refutation that many of these behaviors are relatively normal in our current society and that some of them also seem to be linked to other specific disorders, which makes their understanding and certainty very cloudy, such as: Agoraphobia, GAD, OCD, Depression, and so on. And indeed, so it is. It takes a very advanced acuity from the professional to give a correct diagnosis to a patient (or from the person himself to find his own diagnostic pattern in advance before going to a professional, conduct that as we well know, is increasingly common, and not necessarily negative when done lucidly).

Source

Avoidance behavior when exacerbated can bring many harms to the person's life experience, because, like other classic symptoms of social and personal phobias, it ends up limiting their experiences too much, making them hostage to minimized behaviors, castrating themselves from to experience a life of wholes as man is biologically (in neurological terms) developed to experience. And practically all these avoidance behaviors can be transformed and resignified with correct techniques and a lot of dedication from the person involved, not only through exposure and coping theory, but through behavioral and cognitive analysis with great detail and efficient perception about certain attitudes. which, after being tracked down and caught "in the act" become increasingly incoherent and stupid for the living being itself. It is a laborious process, but if executed with dedication will bring great life improvements.

  • Isolamento
  • Evitar o contato "olho no olho"
  • Falar sempre em voz baixa e pra dentro

What an incredible article! Knowledge is power and I have always been passionate about understanding as much as possible about human behavior... It is very complicated for a layman to read these articles because I, for example, identified with many things that were said, including the example of the fireworks I experience, I hate fireworks and I avoid whenever possible to be in places where I know there will be fireworks.
Thank you so much for sharing, I hope more content like this :)

Hey man! Of course, one or another characteristic cannot lead us to think that we are doomed to a complete disturbance, sometimes we have one or another characteristics, so much so that some are natural to the human being. The issue of fireworks for example is something very common to not like, especially the noisy and useless ones! haha.
Thanks for the feedback, I will keep writing more psychology content! Have a great week!

This is a different psychological view.
I guess the hunger to know the why?, What?, How?,is not there anymore. Thanks for this piece.
I sometimes practices the act of avoidance and it has really affected my social life. However, change is constant.

Thanks for the comment! I have a great passion for understanding human behavior and actions, in "deeper" psychology some of this is pioneered at least. We all have certain avoidance behaviors, the point is that the vast majority can be trained to stay under control, although it is not an easy task!
Have a great week!
