Matte white walls and the dark reflection

avatar

The basement of our house is in pretty bad shape, but it is dry, though will remain cold for some time to come. To brighten it up a little, we have been painting the very rough walls in a base white. It makes a big difference. We will also paint the floors when the time comes, which will clean it up enough to remove 60 years of grime and dust and make it a little more comfortable. The sauna and laundry are in the basement, so we use it often. Eventually, we will heat the floor, but that requires digging out the concrete floor completely and we do not have the funds for this at this time - and probably for a while.

While painting this evening, I was listening to a podcast on various aspects of the ongoing information war, including the growing issue and future threat of deep fakes. The technology to create synthesized versions of all kinds of things has been advancing rapidly, and the market potential is so large that there will be no turning back - the cat is out of the bag. Whenever there are profits to be made, corporations will supply.

When it comes to deep fakes, I believe that blockchain is going to play a part in the verification process. While it will not be able to stop the production, what it could do is be able to apply a verification of originals and potentially apply a web of trust where there can be crowd-sourced verification of some kind.

But, where I think that the tech that provides cheap and easy fakes of human action will be used the most will be in the entertainment industry. Firstly, it essentially makes actors obsolete, as anyone can play the part of anyone - but more than that, it play on our biggest weakness, ourselves.

There are already apps that are able to insert the face of our choosing into movie scenes, but it will go far beyond that, as we will be able to "selfie" ourselves absolutely anywhere - which is probably going to be a boon for the porn industry, if it isn't already. It seems that the test of any new technology seems to be "Can we fuck it", with pretty much every app and platform being used in some way for sexual activity and the commercial viability of a technology seems to hinge on whether the porn industry can adopt it in some way - and now that everyone has a camera and computer in their hand at all time, it has become a testing ground.

While people seem to doubt that AI will overpower our strengths, they forget to recognize that it is our weaknesses that are the gateway in, and the social platforms have shown just how compelling the weakness of "me" can be. The platforms are filled with images of ourselves, selfies and the products we buy and brag about, the places we visit and the lunches we eat. The we is a collective of individuals - a whole lot of "I" who want to be seen, want attention.

With the social disconnection combined with the drive of consumption, I figure that we are going to demand more of ourselves in the future, and with the granularity the data allows, our egos will be targeted ever more heavily, as well as our desires. All that data telling where we go, which images we search, movies we watch and precisely how long our eyes linger and the secret searches we think no one tracks. How long until the objects of our desire become the tools of our entrapment in a world that we will never want to escape?

We are creating digital whitespaces, that will be able to be colored in the perfect shade to attract us, to compel us, to enslave us. All they need to do is give us a narrative of ourselves in the way we want to see ourselves, to make us feel attractive, important, relevant. The technology will increasingly play on our lack of disconnection, while isolating us into a box filled with mirror walls and our favorite subject reflected.

Amazing how a bit of paint can transform any space. Agree with you how the "I" has become so important which is not normal. Society is now very focused on individuality with everyone so self absorbed in what they ate doing. Why do people think others even care what they are doing and it boggles my mind. I have never taken one selfie as I can look in the mirror if I really want to. You have had another late night like me here lol.

the curse of individuality is being seen in the rising depression rates and social unrest - it isn't going away anytime soon it seems.

Yep, a splash of pain does wonders and yes, another late night. I best head to bed though, as it is a work day tomorrow and Smallsteps will be up at 6ish :D

Have a great week and try and get some rest soon. At least one night off maybe.

You too mate. We are in one of those "final stretch" points so that we can move upstairs - so trying to get as much done as possible as it makes life so much easier if we can have that space to live clean. Still a month or more away, but fingers crossed.

There may be more options than digging the concrete floor out for in floor heating. If you have the ceiling height, a false floor could be laid to accommodate the piping for the in floor heat, may save some money, and time if their is room to do it. Also I have heard that the ceramic heaters do a pretty good job in providing heat, they may be an option, they generally mount right on the walls.

It will become hard to separate out the video/audio truth one day. Technology is running so far ahead of the thought processes and ability to grasp, that we are always playing catch up. When AI does come for us we will be unlikely to see its approach.

We were planning on putting in a false floor, but we have been told we "aren't allowed" as there can be issues with mold, as there is no insulation beneath the concrete floor now - just mud it seems. We have the power in our herating systm for water heating it - but I was thinking about trialling an IR heater in the meantime.

When AI does come for us we will be unlikely to see its approach.

I think we are already failing as the intuition for the danger isn't there. Most people I talk to think that I am crazy -while they watch another Netflix show and order another product from Amazon - thinking the decision is theirs.

You definitely do not want to create a mold hazard, at least there are other options, and then maybe a future date for an in floor system.

The advertising bots have learned a lot, and all the microphones built into everything, always listening, and then showing you the latest product you and a friend were discussing in walking life not on line via chat or e-mail. Of course it is all coincidence Google and Microsoft and all the smart phones would not spy on you.

I think that the hazard is quite low and there are materials to mitigate risk further, but at least here, people are not keen to attempt it. We might have to lay a thin veneer of concrete anyway, as the surface is so uneven in some places.

"It is all coincidence" - Just keep repeating this over and over and everything will be fine. :)

And, oh my, do we have weaknesses. Part of me has high hopes for AI, the rest of me has seen too many dystopian science fiction movies.

AI could do a massive amount of good, if calibrated correctly. The problem of course is that the only setting that will get turned up is the "profit" dial.

Oh yeah, and for that you wouldn't have to go much farther than TikTok to check it out. :D

@tarazkp, Finland's winter seems to be very cold. In winter, the basement will not be remodeled. Even if the basement is unfinished, your family will be able to spend a warm winter.

it can be very cold here. Not quite Siberia, but not far off.

I think that it's already happening. With a lot of people who prefer sitting on the phone and avoid real human contact. With people who exchange more emojis than embraces.

I think that it's already happening.

Precisely. A decade down the track and the tech is 1000 times better.
