Technology And Time Resourcefulness: Are We More Resourceful?

avatar

I'd like to think that the answer is yes. The numerous technological breakthroughs that we had in the past decades has not only provided us the opportunity to live a better and more comfortable life but it has also freed a lot of time for us.

It's no longer the standard to drive long hours to work, queue at the bank or wait for days to receive that fax message from your coworker in order to move to the next step of a plan.

All of these are history now. Everything has been digitized and streamlined to a high degree that it almost seems like magic to me.

The Future Looks Bright

Technology has sold us the dream that the future will be great provided that armageddon doesn't happen along the way. I think it's quite unrealistic to expect a utopian future, the goal has always been to avoid a dystopian one.

I see it more like a spectrum in which both utopia and dystopia are at the extremes of the spectrum and we're constantly fluctuating between them. Although, there's a 50% chance to either of them, the probability is higher for the latter.

Nevertheless, I'm excited for our future with technology because I believe in humanity and their ability to do good since they're naturally good. In regards to our time and being resourceful with it, technology has afforded us more time to spend on things we like to do. For example, If I'm not actively working, I can be seen reading a novel, immersing myself in nature or sitting quietly contemplating the levels of reality.

Different Categories

But that might not be the case for you. Maybe it's a variation of the above mentioned or it could be totally different from it. This is because another aspect of technology is that it opened our eyes to all the possibilities out there. So instead of chasing anything, we go out there chasing everything with the limited time we have. In that scenario, time goes from being a surplus to insufficient.

But the category that we should try to not find ourselves in is those who see the more time we have as an opportunity to be lazy. You see them mindlessly scrolling through social media, trying to keep up with the trends and know about everything. In the case of these individuals, we can't say that they're resourceful of the more time technology affords them.

So the answer to the title of the post is non-binary and depends on the individual. However, it is apparent that some are not resourceful with their time no matter how much technology seems to afford them. Many of us find ourselves moving among the three categories depending on our the mood or circumstances. Nothing is fixed.

Thanks for reading!!
