STEMsocial distilled - After the 4th of July, here is the first distilled of July!

avatar

Here is a fresh edition of the distilled of the best blogs posted on STEMsocial last week, this edition being the first one in July. Welcome July, bye bye June, and here is @lemouth for selecting five of the best blogs who drew our attention last week. Feel free to visit those blogs, show them some love and engage with their authors.

For those who are checking out a STEMsocial distilled for the first time, and who are wondering what it is about, it consists of a weekly publication where we highlight some of the best Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics content published on the Hive blockchain (with sometimes excursion in history, psychology, architecture, etc.). Feel free to pay us a visit here on chain or visit our Discord server where we will be happy to meet you!

Featured posts in the distilled are selected based on engagement, topics, style and we forbid any given author to be featured more than once every three distilled. Without more waiting time, below are the posts that made it to this week's top five.

Our top choices

Wednesday Walk : church, museum and ancient trade route

STEMsocial is once in a while expanding its curation activities outside typical STEM fields. This time, we go deep into architecture, and highlight this blog from @tatdt who explores the surroundings of St Ptersburg with us. The author show us that the city is cornered by a bunch of ancient castles and churches, whose architecture is worth a detour. In this context, he travels this week to a village named Ust-Izhora, in the suburbs of St Petersburg, and shares with us a few pictures of impressive old buildings.

Your Tonsils: Should You Keep Them?

For our second selected blog, we will go with a question and ask, together with @agmoore, whether we should keep our tonsils or not. The answer is probably maybe, as there are always risks and benefits to any medical operation. We therefore definitely need a profesionnal to answer. In her blog, the author explores various scientific publications in which this question around the risks is addressed, and investigates also how economy plays a role in decision taking.

Atmospheric pressure and its impact on daily activities

A good distilled is a distilled with some physics in it. @madridbg discusses the three main states of matter in their blog (solid, liquid and gas), and provides details on how we can turn one state into another. In a second part, the influence of atmospheric pressure is discussed, how it impacts some common activites. For instance, do you know at which temperature water boils on the top of a high mountain (which is crucial for cooking)? And how ice-water equilibrium matters for ice-staking?

The extruder of the CR10-V3

We move on with a blog on techonology (you know, the 'T' in STEM). @nitsuga12 had fun in dismantling the extruder of their CR10-V3 3D printer, and shared with us a bunch of pictures of what they did. Well, maybe this was not funny as the reason for the whole process was that the 3D printer was not printing correctly. At the end, they fixed the bloody thing, upgraded their printer in the process, and also managed to get hurt. Printers are dangerous beasts!

Parasitological and Fungal Assessment of Fresh Cow Milk Obtained from Five Herds in Karshi, F.C.T. Nigeria

Our regular STEMsocial member @cyprianj introduced us some of his research work today, on raw milk and the fact that it was connected with recurrent cases of infection with fungi and parasites in Nigeria. Whereas milk consumption is in principle good for health, it also consists of a perfect medium for bacteria development and proliferation. We must thus be careful, especially when non-pasteurised raw milk is used (as it is the norma im many place in the world).

As usual, all rewards earned on the distilled posts are used to fund the STEMsocial project functioning and activities. The author of the distilled, who may be any STEMsocial member depending on the week, gets 30% of the rewards of this post. Moreover, @raj808 gets 7% for the usage of his image. If you like what we do, please consider joining our community on HIVE and delegating to the @stemsocial account (85% of the curation rewards are returned), or trailing it.

Have fun!

These are indeed very informative and debatable articles written by our fellow Hiveians.

I had a very constructive discussion with agmoore on her post on tonsillectomy and it's affects on human life.
