STEMng Digest: Keep spreading the word of Hive

Authored by @gentleshaid

The STEMsocial community and her subcommunities have been around on this blockchain for about 5 years now. During this period, we have consistently supported authors of stem contents and this makes us one of the oldest curation groups on Hive. The goals remain the same, to bring in brilliant scientists and science enthusiasts to the platform that could help drive the value of the platform with their quality content, contributions, and engagement. We are therefore using this medium to remind the members of the community to keep spreading the word around on other social media and even off the web - in real life.

Welcome to a new edition of our weekly digest.

Who are we?

STEMng is the Nigerian sub-community of the stemsocial community, a community that has been supporting stem authors on the hive blockchain for about four years now. While stemsocial focuses on everyone irrespective of their country, STEMng is specifically for Nigerians. The best stem contents published by Nigerians on the Hive blockchain is highlighted on weekly basis.

Below are the posts that made our digest for this week:

  1. @ebingo: History of Mental Health in Africa (Yaba Left Psychiatric Hospital Lagos)

We live in a world where mental health is becoming more and more important every passing minute. While many try to wave away mental health issues in developing countries like Nigeria, only the victims know. Deservedly, our first selection for today talks about the history of mental health as far as the Nigerian clime is concerned. So many unpleasant things about the history but they are there to teach us lessons. Read the post see the past and the current status as far as mental in Nigeria is concerned.

2.@bloomcindy: Let's discuss why cross matching of blood cannot be done on neonates

A bloody post, but in an educative way. Recipients and donors of blood usually needs their blood crossmatched before a decision is arrived at to prevent incompatibility and the terrible consequences that usually follow. However, when neonates are involved, crossmatching becomes undesirable because of the fragile nature of neonates immune system. How then is blood donation to neonates carried out? Read the post for more.

3.@dancinglockers: How sand and stones help in water purification especially in areas with oil contaminated waters

Water is indispensable to life and this what this post from a new entrant to hive talks about. Many of us are lucky to have clean water but very few people from oil producing regions of Nigeria can say the same thing. How do they get the much needed water when almost all the water in the region have been polluted by crude oil? This is what makes the post interesting. It discussed a fairly inexpensive and simple water treatment procedures used in thi region. An interesting read, I must admit.

4.@cyprianj: Handling paternity and maternity dispute: the role of genetic testing and baby tagging

We live in a woke world where sexual liberation is considered a fundamental human right. This has come with many consequences, one of which is paternity fraud. No doubt that cases of paternity frauds have skyrocketed in the recent time although a few might be due to babies being switched at birth. This is where genetic testing plays a huge role. How is this achieved? Head over and give the post a read.

5.@saintgentle: Groundwater shortage- How real is our fear?

Rounding off our recommended read for this week is another post on water. A significant portion of the water that humans depend on comes from the ground. However, there are practices that may result in shortage of groundwater, according to the author. What are these practices and what are the likely consequences apart from water shortage? The answer to these questions and more were addressed in the post.

Does STEMng accept any kind of topic?
Or must it be science related?

It has to be related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Or other subjects such as history, psychology and architecture
