Lettering can simply be referred to as the construction of letters, phrase, figure or word using the right format.

Qualities of a good lettering

Legibility: This is the ability of the letters constructed to be readable, simple and arranged in orderly manner without loosing its beauty.
Simplicity: This is the ability of lettering to be simple and well arranged.
Spacing: The space between letters and space between words should be well spaced.
GOOD B-AD W-OR-SE
Suitability: The choice of letters and words should be suitable for the message it is meant to convey.

CONSTRUCTION OF UPPERCASE LETTERS

Procedures in constructing uppercase letters using Grid Method: Uppercase letters are also referred to as capital or Block letters. This is so because the shapes of these resemble a block or rectangle.
A grid is a set of lines ruled into squares as in a 2b exercise book.

Step 1 Make a grid by ruling lines in your cardboard
(a) Draw lines at the four edges of the cardboard sheet to give a 1cm border.
(b) Mark out the horizontal lines at both edges by 1cm depending. On what measurement you want.
(c) Now you can use a long ruler and your pencil to join those dots or marks together (for instance horizontal against the other horizontal and vertical) against the other vertical.

Step 2: This is the stage where proper construction of the letters will start.
(a) Decide the size of the letters you wish to construct.
(b) Mark out the block which the "A" will occupy by following the formula 5 holes by 3 holes i.e 5 holes vertically and 3 holes horizontally.
(c) Now mark out the important lines of the letter "A" on the block marked.
(d) With the aid of your ruler join these mark out points to give you the letter "A".
(e) Where the letter is a rounded one like the letter "O" you need to curve out the edges using French curve with a hole at all the edges.

The formula 5 holes by 3 holes is the basic formular but some letters deviate a little from the formular as a result of their size e.g letters M, W, I, etc.
Letter "M" = 5 holes by 5 holes or 5 holes by 4 holes, I = 5 holes by 1 hole. Holes here is referring to the square spaces between the line of grids.

Step 3: Spacing is very paramount in construction of letters. And this will help when writing words and phrases and most importantly writing of sentences.
The following steps should be considered when spacing
(a) Calculate the letters, words, phrases and the spaces in between them. Also spaces in between the two letters or words at the upper and lower parts.
(b) Then mark out your plan and ensure the words are well spaced before you start your construction.

How to carry out the spacing of letters
(a) Give maximum spacing of one hole depending on your letter in between to letters that are vertically stroke e.g I, F.
(b) Give maximum spacing to two curvilinear shapes that are adjacent e.g O, G, C.
(c) Give little or space to adjacent vertical and diagonal strokes e.g G, A, T.

Good tutorial. Would be of more benefit to the art community than science community
