Wobble board- Balance training, Strength training and Injury recovery

Let's do a little exploration in the world of wobble boards, or as some call them, balance boards. I used to just call them wobble boards, before discovering they have another name and that was balance board. Just a heads up, I might use these names interchangeably as we go along.

So, what exactly are balance boards?

Balance boards are like circular platforms with bumpy surfaces, not just something you'd find in a toy store. Sometimes, they even resemble UFOs when seen from certain angles! But don't be fooled by their appearance; they serve a big purpose. They help people with goals of achieving balance, strength and preventing injuries. But you see trust me, there's more to it than meets the eye.

Now, let's go into why these boards matter and how they're used.

First off, they're great for helping folks, especially older ones, stay steady on their feet and avoid taking tumbles. By standing on these boards and trying to stay balanced, older adults can improve their stability and lower their chances of falling. And let's be real, falls can lead to serious injuries, so anything that helps prevent them is a big deal.

Balance boards are also handy for folks recovering from leg injuries. Doing exercises on them can help people get better at sensing where their body is in space (spatial awareness) which is called proprioception. Plus, it can make their muscles stronger, which is key for getting back to everyday activities after getting hurt.

But it's not just about recovery, not at all; these boards can also help prevent new injuries, especially for athletes. They might not stop big injuries like tearing a ligament in the knee, but using them regularly can lessen the chances of getting hurt again. They help build up those muscles, at the very same time improving balance, both important for staying safe and sound.

And guess what? They're not just for legs; they can give your upper body a workout too! By doing exercises like push-ups or reaching for things while balancing, you can make your arms and shoulders stronger while improving your balance at the same time. Just make sure you're doing it right to avoid any exercise-related injuries

Now as much as building strength and recovering from an injury is paramount, a strong core is super important for lots of things, like bending, lifting, and even just standing up straight. And yep, you guessed it, balance boards can help with that too! By standing on one and trying to stay balanced, you can make those core muscles stronger without having to do boring sit-ups.

But what if you don't have a balance board? No worries! You can still get similar benefits by standing on one leg or both legs on a soft pillow or foamy mat to add a bit of wobble. Heck, you can even make your own balance board using stuff you have lying around the house.

Now, let's talk about what makes these boards tick.

There are three key things that affect how well they work: the size of the board, the angle it tilts at, and the surface area underneath. Understanding these things helps physiotherapists tailor exercises to fit each person's needs, making sure they get the most out of their workout.

But it doesn't stop there; balance boards aren't just for rehabbing injuries. They can also help strengthen and improve your overall fitness. With a strong coore, you'll be able to do all sorts of thiings without worrying about hurting yourself.

In a nutshell or two nutshells, balance boards might seem simple, but they're mighty effective. So very next time you see one, remember that it's not just a piece of equipment – it's a tool for keeping your that body, your body strong and healthy.

Thanks for reading
