Greetings again my dear friends, I hope you are very well, we continue with the proposed purpose, that is, to locate or structure examples related to the phenomenon of the Doppler effect, through its general formulation, we have seen how this formula is composed of several variables, all very valuable when interpreting the action of the Doppler effect, therefore, it is necessary to show you the sequence of each of the variables analyzed so far, starting from the frequency perceived by the receiver of a sound under three conditions.

First condition: Receiver immobile, and sound emitting focus in motion.

Second condition: Receiver in motion, and sound emitter immobile.

Third condition: Receiver and emitter of sound, both in motion.

Then we continue with the calculation of other variables such as:

Travel speed of an acoustic signal receiver (VR).

The frequency of the emitting source of a given sound (fo).

The speed of the sound emission source (Vf)

In this opportunity we will analyze the velocity of the propagation medium (Vm) of an acoustic signal, and as we have done so far, we will focus on another practical exercise as you can see below:

Exercise

A person standing still in an unknown place perceives an acoustic signal at 4,800 Hz, and this wave motion is emitted at a frequency of 4,836.4 Hz, the speed with which the emitting source of these waves moves is 41 km/h, in relation to all the characteristics indicated above, answer the following questions:

a.- What is the propagation velocity of the acoustic signal?

b.- In relation to the calculated propagation speed, what is the material or elastic medium used by this acoustic signal for its propagation from the emitting source to the sound receiver?

Solution

First of all, we will begin by pointing out the general equation of the Doppler effect, with the description of each of its variables:

Fórmula_1.jpg

fr = The frequency of the sound perceived by the receiver.
fo = Represents the sound frequency of the emitting source.
Vm = Velocity of the sound propagation medium (air in this case)
VR = Receiver speed.
Vf = Speed of the sound emitting source.

Data:

fr = 4.800 Hz.
fo = 4.836,4 Hz.
Vm = ?
Vf = 41 km/h * 1000 m/km*1h/3.600 s = 11,38 m/s.
VR = 0 m/s, for being immobile.

a.- According to the data supplied, the speed of the sound receiver is null, because it is motionless, so we are left with the following equation.

Fórmula_2.jpg

From this formula 2, we proceed to clear the requested variable, i.e., the speed at which the acoustic signal propagates in the material or elastic medium used, as follows:

Despeje y fórmula 3.jpg

Now with formula 3, we proceed to substitute the known variables in order to establish the propagation velocity of the acoustic signal perceived by the receiver, which is immobile, and in a material medium still to be deciphered, therefore, you can observe the following calculations.

Cálculo de la Fórmula 3 para Vm.jpg

This is the propagation speed of the acoustic signal perceived by the receiver, and with it, we can answer the second question.

b.- In relation to the result obtained 1,500.7 m/s, we can say that the receiver was immersed in a certain mass of water, motionless, when over it passed a boat whose propeller movement of its engine produced a sound with a frequency of 4,836.4 Hz, which reached the ears of the receiver that was under water, remember that the standard speed of sound in the material or elastic medium such as water is approximately 1,500 m/s, and thus we reached the material or elastic medium we wanted to know.

Analysis of results

We continue with the purpose of expanding the knowledge of the recognized phenomenon of the Doppler effect, through its general formulation, and with practical exercises, this time with the calculation of the propagation speed of a given acoustic signal, remembering that the standard speed of sound in the air is 340 m/s, however, sound propagates not only through the air, but also through any other material medium as the one analyzed in this opportunity, i.e. water.

With this exercise we also continue to prove that sound is an essential part of our lives, that is why this feature makes the Doppler effect is also, with this article we managed to calculate each of the variables present in the formulation of the Doppler effect, which is very versatile and very useful at the time of understanding this phenomenon.

Until another opportunity my dear friends.

VR = Velocidad del receptor.
Vf = Velocidad del foco emisor del sonido.

Datos:
fr = 4.800 Hz.
fo = 4.836,4 Hz.
Vm = ?
Vf = 41 km/h * 1000 m/km*1h/3.600 s = 11,38 m/s.
VR = 0 m/s, por estar inmóvil.
