Greetings again my dear friends, I hope you are all very well, I continue with you locating more examples related to the Doppler effect, and this, through the use of its general formulation, since it is composed of several very useful variables to interpret this phenomenon from different sides, so far, in summary I will show you the sequence of each physical magnitude analyzed, starting from the frequency perceived by the receiver of a sound under three conditions.

First condition: Receiver immobile, and sound emitting focus in motion.

Second condition: Receiver in motion, and sound emitter immobile.

Third condition: Receiver and emitter of sound, both in motion.

After analyzing these three conditions, we implement this formulation for the following variable.

Travel speed of an acoustic signal receiver.

After analyzing such an important physical magnitude within the Doppler effect, we were able to calculate another variable, such as:

The frequency of the source emitting a certain sound.

Now we will take another important step in expanding our knowledge of the Doppler effect, by calculating another of its variables, in this case, the speed of the sound emission source (Vf), and for this purpose, we will focus on another practical exercise as you can see below:

Exercise

In one of those family walks outdoors, a very characteristic sound for children, attracts the attention of my little daughter, and how not to do it, is the sound of a small horn or horn, used by a seller of delicious nacelles, my daughter perceives the sound with a frequency of 1. 040 Hz, the acoustic signal propagates through the air at a speed of 340 m/s, and the frequency with which the sound comes out of the horn is 1.050 Hz, both my daughter and I, we are sitting on the sidewalk of a square, in relation to the above characteristics, answer the following questions:

a.- To buy a basket for my daughter, I would have to wait for the basket maker to come to where we are sitting, or call him since he has moved away from us?

a.- What is the speed at which the boatman travels?

Solution

First, as we have done in previous articles, we will begin by pointing out the general equation of the Doppler effect, with the respective description of each one of its variables:

Fórmula_1.jpg

fr = It is the frequency of the sound perceived by the receiver.
fo = Represents the sound frequency of the emitting source.
Vm = Velocity of the sound propagation medium (air in this case)
VR = Receiver speed.
Vf = Speed of the sound emitting source.

Data:

fr = 1040 Hz.
fo = 1.050 Hz.
Vm = 340 m/s.
VR = 0 m/s, we are immobile.
Vf = ?

a.- To answer our first question, we must focus on our position, which is immobile, since we are seated, and in relation to the frequencies given, we can notice how the frequency that my daughter receives is lower (1.040 Hz) to the frequency with which the sound of the bugle comes out (1. 050 Hz), this makes us conclude that we had to call the seller of the basket because he had already passed in front of us, that is to say, he was moving away from our stationary position, that is why the frequency that my daughter received was already lower than the frequency emitted by the small horn.

b.- In relation to the data provided, we can clearly see how we have to clear the variable requested in equation 1, that is, the speed of the sound emitting focus (Vf), it is important to take into account that the speed of the receiver is zero, because it is immobile, this leads us to reduce this equation to the following one:

Fórmula_2.jpg

It is also important to highlight the fact that it indicates that the frequency received by the receiver is lower than the frequency emitted, i.e., the emitting focus is moving away, therefore, equation 2 will be implemented with a plus sign (+), as shown below:

Fórmula_3.jpg

Now we proceed to clear the variable of the velocity of the sound emitting focus (Vf), as indicated above:

Despeje y Fórmula 4.jpg

With this equation 4, we can calculate the velocity of the sound emitting focus, as you can see below:

Cálculo de la Fórmula 4 con signo (+).jpg

This is the velocity of the sound emitting focus, i.e., of the waffle boat, in relation to the analysis presented, and we continue demonstrating the different applications of the general formulation of the Doppler effect.

Analysis of results

We continue with our purpose of being able to extend the learning of the Doppler effect with practical exercises, by means of its general equation, this time calculating the speed of the sound emitting focus, that is, that of a man riding his tricycle, which moved at a speed of 3.27 m/s, while playing his little bugle periodically emitting a sound captured by a girl sitting with her father on one of the sidewalks of a local square.

Sound is part of our lives, that is why the Doppler effect is also present in any activity of the human being, later we will see if it is possible to continue analyzing other variables or physical magnitude of this phenomenon through its general equation, beyond all the previous variables described at the beginning of this post.

Until another opportunity my dear friends.

VR = Velocidad del receptor.
Vf = Velocidad del foco emisor del sonido.

Datos:
fr = 1040 Hz.
fo = 1.050 Hz.
Vm = 340 m/s.
VR = 0 m/s, estamos inmóviles.
Vf = ?
