Greetings again my dear friends I hope you are all very well, we continue looking for more examples of application of the Doppler phenomenon, through its general formulation, so far with this general equation we have analyzed or calculated the frequency perceived by a receiver under three conditions, already described, but, it is necessary to point them out again to keep the sequence, and they are:

First condition: Receiver immobile, and sound emitting focus in motion.

Second condition: Receiver in motion, and sound emitter immobile.

Third condition: Receiver and emitter of sound, both in motion.

All this using the formulation for the Doppler effect phenomenon, however, with this equation we were also able to calculate another physical magnitude involved in this phenomenon, which was the following:

Travel speed of an acoustic signal receiver

Now I intend to continue calculating other variables within the general formulation of the Doppler effect, such as the frequency of the emitting focus of a given sound, so we will focus on this calculation in this opportunity, through a practical exercise which you can see below:

Exercise

On a formula 1 race track, the engineers of a team are analyzing all the details of their race car, this fast machine emits an impressive sound when driving on the track, especially on the straight sections, and in these straight sections they analyze the behavior of their car, however, they do not know the sound emission frequency of the car, but, they perceive this sound at a frequency of 6. 400 Hz, a person belonging to this construction team has in his hands a speedometer, and observes that in the straight section the car reaches a constant speed of 320 km/h, in relation to these characteristics, answer the following questions:

a.- What is the frequency of the sound emitted by the formula 1 car?

Solution

First of all, we will start by pointing out the general equation of the Doppler effect, with the necessary description of each of its variables:

Fórmula 1.jpg

fr = It is the frequency of the sound perceived by the receiver.
fo = Represents the sound frequency of the emitting source.
Vm = Velocity of the sound propagation medium (air in this case)
VR = Receiver speed.
Vf = Speed of the sound emitting source.

For this occasion we will use this equation to calculate the emission frequency of the sound emitting source (in this case the formula 1 car), with the purpose of learning another application of this formulation, so let's start with our stated goal.

a.- Data

fr = 6.400 Hz.
fo = ?
Vm = 340 m/s.
VR = 0 m/s, the equipment is immobile.
Vf = 320 km/h . 1000 m/km . 1 h/3.600 s = 88,89 m/s.

It is necessary to remember again that the Doppler effect causes the receiver of an acoustic signal to receive a frequency different from the frequency emitted by a particular sound emitting focus, therefore, such frequency received may be higher or lower than the frequency emitted, but, we must know the frequency of emission of such sound to make this comparison, for this, we must clear from equation 1, the variable representing the frequency of the emitting focus (fo), but, before we must note that the speed of the receiver is zero, because the equipment is stationary at the time of analysis, this leads us to reduce the equation to the following:

Fórmula 2.jpg

Now we proceed to clear the variable of the frequency of the sound emitting focus (fo), as indicated above:

Despeje y Fórmula 3.jpg

With this equation 3, we can calculate the frequency of the sound emitting source, as follows:

Cálculo de la Fórmula 3 con signo (+).jpg

Using the plus sign (+), this is the frequency of the sound emitted by the car, noting that the team building the team is receiving a frequency different from the frequency of the emitting focus, characteristic of the Doppler effect, if we did it with the minus sign (-) in the previous equation, and with the same conditions, we would also have to obtain a difference between the frequency perceived and emitted, let's see if such a difference occurs.

Cálculo de la Fórmula 3 con signo (-).jpg

You can verify that there is also a difference between the frequency of emission and the frequency at which the sound is received by the engineering equipment, as we have pointed out, characteristic of the Doppler effect phenomenon.

Analysis of results

In this opportunity we continue to expand the learning of the Doppler effect, and the variety of application of the general equation of this physical phenomenon, this time with you I could calculate the frequency of the emitting focus of the sound, under certain conditions, proving that the development of the Doppler effect is still appreciated when there are different frequencies, the perceived by the receiver and the one emitted by the source of sound emission.

We will see later if it is possible to continue analyzing other variables, beyond the frequencies perceived by the receiver of the sound, the speed of the receiver of the acoustic signal and the frequency of the sound emitting focus, this third variable, analyzed on this occasion, is the speed of the receiver of the acoustic signal and the frequency of the sound emitting focus.

Until another opportunity my dear friends.

VR = Velocidad del receptor.

a.- Datos:
fr = 6.400 Hz.
fo = ?
Vm = 340 m/s.
VR = 0 m/s, el equipo esta inmóvil.
Vf = 320 km/h . 1000 m/km . 1 h/3.600 s = 88,89 m/s.
