Greetings again my dear friends as always hoping you are all very well, after analyzing the wonderful phenomenon of the Doppler effect which is an intrinsic phenomenon of sound, we move on this occasion to the analysis of another intrinsic phenomenon of sound as its reflection, the sound after being emitted by any type of vibratory motion propagates through different material or elastic media, in these media may be obstacles that bounce the sound waves that carry, generating what we call sound reflection.

The sound is distributed within a wide sound or acoustic spectrum, from a view of its frequencies, to remember this spectrum can observe the following figure 1.

Figure_1_Inglés.JPG

This in order to better position us at the time of analysis of each of the next practical exercises to be performed, and the same, now related to the reflection of sound, I will share some applications (with exercises) both artificially and naturally of these sound waves and also note that they are acoustic signals within our audible range or outside it, as in the case of infra and ultrasound.

Therefore, let's analyze the following exercise as you can see below:

Exercise

On the surface of a certain volume of water there are two beautiful dolphins, it is a mother dolphin with her little calf, apparently it is a day of teaching, since in the same way that we humans do, these little calves learn from their mothers, in this case it teaches her the contact with the surface of the water, and how to jump out of it, and also, how to locate their food, in relation to this last aspect, after a long time on the surface of the water, the mother dolphin decides to go in search of food.

To do this, it emits a sound into the water in order to locate some prey that can feed it and its offspring, knowing that the speed of the sound emitted in the water is approximately 1,510 m/s, and with a wavelength of 0.035 m.

Considering that dolphins and other marine species use echolocation as a natural prey orientation system, which makes the waves emitted collide with any object or body of any species they wish to hunt, and bounce back to them again, it is important to note that dolphins and other marine species use echolocation as a natural prey orientation system.

Each time the mother dolphin emitted its respective sound inside the water, it jumped out of the water 2.5 s. after the emission of the sound waves, manifesting with the jump that it had received back the emitted signal.

Based on the above considerations, answer the following questions:

a.- Calculation of the total distance of the reflection of the emitted sound, how far away is the possible dolphin food?

b.- What would be the frequency emitted by the mother dolphin, and what type of sound would it be, according to the sound or acoustic spectrum shown in Figure 1?

Solution

Data:

ʎ = 0,035 m (Wavelength)
fo = ? (Sound frequency of the emitting source)
dt = ? (Total distance of sound reflection)
do = ? (Distance from dolphin food)
Vm = 1.510 m/s (Velocity of the sound propagation medium, water in this case)
t = 2,5 s. (Total sound reflection time)

a.- Before answering our first question, we must take into account that the time of 2.5 seconds represents the duration for the sound waves to go and return to the source or emitting focus of the acoustic signal, therefore, having this in mind, let's start solving the exercise using the following formula 1.

Fórmula_1.jpg

Then clearing to obtain the desired variable, i.e. distance (d).

Fórmula_2.jpg

With formula 2, we proceed to calculate the total distance traveled by the acoustic signal back and forth, i.e., the reflection of the sound emitted, in order to know at what distance the dolphins' food is located.

This is the total distance (3,775 m) of the reflection of the sound emitted by the mother dolphin, since the time taken was 2.5 seconds.

Now we want the distance where the possible food for these marine species is located, and it represents half of the total length traveled by the sound waves during their reflection.

This is the distance (1,887.5 m) at which the possible food for the dolphins is located.

b.- The following formula can be used to answer this question.

Fórmula_3.jpg

Then we clear to obtain the desired variable for this case, which is the frequency of the sound of the emitting source (fo).

Fórmula_4.jpg

Cálculo de la frecuencia.jpg

In this way we know the frequency with which the mother dolphin emitted the echolocation sound of her possible prey for food and that of her calf, and according to the spectrum shown in Figure 1, the mother dolphin emitted an ultrasound characteristic of this beautiful family of marine species.

Analysis of results

Wonderful each of the phenomena that develop in our environment, among which we find the sound, and this in turn, generating other intrinsic phenomena, such as the reflection of its carrier waves, and the same of great utility for dolphins and other living species of this planet, where we include us, where we use the sound in its various presentations, as infrasound, audible sound and ultrasound, as analyzed on this occasion.

There are many applications that we can analyze about the propagation of sound waves, through practical mathematical exercises, adapted to situations of our environment, as always has taught us the science of Physics, and all other scientific branches, later I will continue with you analyzing other examples of mutual interest, to deepen the learning of the essential phenomenon of sound.

Until another opportunity my dear friends.

Datos:

ʎ = 0,035 m (Longitud de onda)
fo = ? (Frecuencia del sonido del foco emisor)
dt = ? (Distancia total de la reflexión del sonido)
do = ?

The distance of a sound reflection can be calculated by measuring the time it takes for the sound to reflect off of the object and return to the listener. The speed of sound is 340 m/s, so the distance the sound has traveled is twice the time it took for the sound to reflect off the object. The frequency of the sound can be calculated by measuring the wavelength of the sound waves. The wavelength of sound waves is the distance between two successive waves.
Thank you for sharing
