WITHOUT WATER THERE ARE NO BIRDS🧠 / SIN AGUA NO HAY AVES👨‍🏫👨‍🎓

Birds being my specialty, I always try to update myself and keep my "eye" well trained, so I go at least once a month to a hestuary, lagoon, river to observe the behavior of birds, I saw in the news that in the Sesimbra Bird Observation Center, some remodeling of the space would be carried out and that would suspend the flow of water from the Tejo River, it is the main hestuary that feeds the lagoons of this observation center, this small post is to affirm the theory of many biologists " a body of water attracts more birds than a land site"? Join me in my post to learn a little more about the behavior of the feathered!🤔🦆🦩🦚

I went to this site in sesimbra which has the name "interpretive area little lagoon", it is located in the sesimbra area and as I mentioned before it is fed by the "tejo" hestuary which in turn flows into the atlantic ocean that is why it is The water has a degree of salinity which makes it an interesting area for birds as there is a lot of biodiversity, from aquatic plants to small and large invertebrates. The study area is divided into two bodies of water or "lagoons" that have the name: "lagoon stagnant" and "lagoon small" both with different characteristics, the latter being of greater proportion and depth. The times I visit the site I always get quite a few species of aquatic and terrestrial birds, I wondered how I could infer the bird population on the site if the lagoons were dry!👨‍🎓👨‍🏫🧠

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SMALL LAGOON🚩🦜🧭 / CARACTERISTICA DE LA LAGUNA PEQUEÑA🚙🌏🧠

I did a short interview with the person in charge of the place and she told me that in general terms the small lagoon is not so attractive for birds because it is deeper and waterfowl here cannot hunt small invertebrates, usually the birds here use this body of water as a zone of "rest" and "social" interaction the common population here is: Spatula clypeata, Anas penelope! in general they are birds of the genus "Anas" or as we know them as ducks! Something that caught my attention and that undoubtedly stands out in this lagoon is that it has a small channel that is constantly fed by the river, therefore this lagoon is almost always full! so the tides do not affect it!🤩🧐👨‍🎓🦜

The "stagnant" lagoon is very interesting because, as you can see, it does not have channels that feed it with water, therefore it depends a lot on the high tide to fill it, but the ornithologist "Laura Antunez" confirms that this body of water tends to present a Greater diversity of bird species because it is much shallower than the small lagoon, therefore many birds can feed here, the most common birds here are herons, predominating: "Egretta garzetta" since it is a resident species.🌏🧠👨‍🏫

I have some scientific papers published in ornithology magazines but I always like to cite this work I did on the Venezuelan coast where I made a comparison of aquatic and terrestrial birds, basically I carried out a population census to analyze which area of study has the greatest biodiversity of birds. Therefore, it seems appropriate to compare this small work with my research, which is much more formal in principle and underwent an evaluation by professional ornithologists from Venezuela, such as Rosana Calchi. Therefore, I will use the quote "Quevedo; Uzcategui, 2012" Let's see if this research in these two gaps agrees with the conclusions obtained in my comparative work on Venezuela!🚩🌊👨‍🏫

I made the observations at 9:00 a.m., which is one of the interesting times to see birds, and my investigation lasted 4 hours, I began with the largest lagoon, which would be my point (2), and just as the specialist indicated. I saw some flocks of ducks that were resting, I was able to observe a species of heron feeding in the shallower area of the lagoon, I was also able to see the species: Fulica atra that was feeding in total I saw 4 species of birds in this area and an approximate of 41 individuals.

It is difficult to integrate in my inventory the species that are flying through the lagoons since they are passing species that do not belong to the population of the lagoons, but I could notice a bird of prey that normally flies in a circle waiting for a potential prey, normally they are small birds like Ducks that separate from the flock and are easier to catch! this behavior was also common in bodies of water, "Quevedo, Uzcategui 2012" in my work I could see some birds of prey flying over certain areas to catch some fish, other birds or even some are scavengers!🧠🌏🦜👨‍🎓

When we carry out censuses or research on lagoons, we generally must also count those birds that are in the surroundings, these two lagoons have pine forests, and it is very common to see land birds in this area, and this observation is essential to increase the "richness" of our study area, compared to my field work, the areas with bodies of water around a forest tend to present more species due to "the unlimited availability of resources (Quevedo, Uzcategui, 2012)" and I was able to observe several species of birds around of the small lagoon I would say about 6 species!👨‍🏫👨‍🎓🌏

This lagoon is normally not so dry, what happened is that they drained it to carry out some remodeling, so I took the opportunity to compare both lagoons whose resources are very different, as you can see in my two hours of observation and photography here in the lagoon. stagnant I only saw about 8 ducks, otherwise I did not see any other birds, and there is a similarity with my work done in 2012, birds like all living beings try to colonize spaces where they have access to water, it is normal not to observe aquatic birds like herons that feed on small fish, do not observe any Alcedinidae that are the "kingfishers" this species is very common in this area! And I can affirm again that if we want to carry out a bird cessation, we will find a greater diversity of species in shallow, extensive bodies of water that always have available resources! We are in the season of migratory birds, and what interest does a dry lagoon have for a bird? the birds that come migrants from africa prefer areas closer to the hestuary!😮😮

I have to emphasize again in this small investigation that this type of work is very important to know the bird population in this area, I had some hope that this lagoon when it was dry would attract some kind of opportunistic bird but it was not like that, it was all On the contrary, water as an indispensable resource for birds, if it is not available, the birds tend to move to other areas where water is abundant! therefore I conclude that the birds that were common here in this lagoon move to the "small lagoon" where the water is more abundant!😏🤔🤔

The water channels have an impact on the ecology of the area, when the water channels are altered by natural or anthropogenic factors, then the stagnant lagoon is of no interest to resident or migratory birds, there is something that I must highlight and that is that in Portugal we are going through a great drought, "https://www.theportugalnews.com/es/noticias/2022-03-12/aumenta-la-situacion-de-sequia-extrema/65743" that is having a great impact on our ecology, and I wonder in addition to the work that was done in the lagoon, is it affected by the drought? I have a very strong intuition that it is so! therefore I will return to the park when the works are finished and see the ecological behavior! If the lagoon is still dry, then it is very clear evidence that the drought is causing great damage to the bird populations of our country!❗💯❓

I am sure water attracts not only bird, but actually a full ecosystem ranging from the smallest organisms to much larger ones like birds. I however agree that the most interesting ones to observe are the birds (at least from my own subjective opinion). Thanks for sharing your pictures. I enjoyed them from the first to the last.

As a side note, the last point you raised should make us thinking. Climate change and ecological considerations impact all of this (i.e. nature in general). We are currently loosing already a lot, and our children won't be able to enjoy many things we do…
