I have to admit that before visiting and studying this historic site I had no idea of the meaning of these structures that we can find in many parts of the world, there are probably some in your country, but do you really know why they were built? which represent?? what era are they from? You already know me as I am addicted to science, I always want to know the answer to everything that generates some curiosity in me! then get ready because in my little post we will learn about dolmens!๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

While I was on vacation I talked with my wife and we passed by this historic site called "dolmen cunha baixa" it is about 300km from my house, so we played "who guesses" we both tried to guess what these stones were and what they were used for, never in my life had visited one! We decided to park the vehicle and visit the place in order to find answers! The only information I knew at the time was: "very old structures", many scientific references define a dolmen as a large "monolithic" structure, that is, a shelter built with stones or slabs that had a particularity? You know which one is??? they were buried vertically and horizontally!๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜
๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿคฏ

I have to admit that I was expecting a structure that was millions of years old, but according to research and carbon measurements,14 the dolmens date back to when humanity began to settle in small towns and learned to practice agriculture and grazing. that are approximately 5000 years old, okay then we already defined what a dolmen is now we are going to investigate a little and see what they were built for!๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿคฉ

I read that there are some theories as to why these stone structures were built, but the most accepted is that they served as tombs, when a dolmen was discovered, excavations were immediately carried out and guess what was discovered? Bone remains of people, and not just a body!! They were massive burials, it is not only believed that they were built in the Neolithic, there are also dolmens that were built in the Chalcolithic, the continents where dolmens were found are: Asia, Africa and Europe! the largest concentration of these beautiful graves are found in the entire Atlantic fringe! and it makes sense why there are dozens of them in Portugal!๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ
๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿงญ

Perhaps for us these structures are simple and easy to do, because we simply use some machinery in hours we finish the job! but 5,000 years ago there was no heavy machinery for construction and if we compare the effort that was made here then it is definitely a feat created by humanity, many men were required to carry out the work! It was a job that required months to finish. Imagine that a stone could weigh more than 100 tons! A whale weighs 130 tons...๐Ÿฆพ๐Ÿง

As I mentioned, it seems easy... But it is not. Building these dolmens was quite difficult, well first of all this dolmen is more than 6000 years old, that is, it is older than previously thought, communities dedicated to grazing, fishing and planting lived here; In the excavations, remains of weapons (bows and arrows) made of wood were obtained, apart from other wooden utensils! the trunks functioned as pulleys and as a means of transporting the stones! this dolmen is not so basic since it has divisions such as (a corridor) a (main chamber) even an atrium!
๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿคฏ

Firstly, the stones were moved and positioned with the trunks, previously large excavations were carried out to position the stones that would be buried vertically, then with a pulley-shaped trunk the stone was raised, previously "cement" was not used to bury the stones. stones what was done was that the space was filled with smaller stones! sadly the phenomenon of erosion wreaks havoc on these structures that is why many of those we see are restored!
๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿคฏ

What motivates these funerary structures is the belief of society that there was life after death, the question is anyone could be buried in the dolmens? no!!! According to studies, only the elite of the communities could be buried in the dolmens!๐Ÿคด๐Ÿ‘ธ

Not all dolmens were the same, there were different types of dolmen! some were very basic with 2 vertical stones and one horizontal, and it was created as a fence with other vertical stones around it! if a dolmen had a corridor then it was more complex and was identified as a "corridor tomb" then there are even more complex dolmens with galleries and divisions where the main corridor cannot be differentiated! I presume this one here is a second category dolmen! and well with this I say goodbye I hope you have learned something new!๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I didn't know dolmen could be found elsewhere than in the northern part of Europe. Thanks a lot for this share (including the nice illustrative pictures)!
