October 17, 2021, today at 9:00 am I prepare to analyze a water sample that I have taken in a park, I do not know what awaits me when I drop a drop of water and take it to the magnifying glass! microscopic life never ceases to amaze me, sometimes I find organisms so simple that it immediately comes to mind! WUOW !! how simple life is! but on other occasions I find myself much more complex, I classify them as "microscopic monsters" they are parasites or some other higher organism that makes my skin crawl when I see their organs and movements! I am already psyched up and psychologically prepared to see life in a drop of water!🤔😮
In my short life I have observed that life makes its way through any type of biological condition, and collected water in acidic places, in very alkaline places, muddy waters, sewage, and had the privilege of analyzing water samples from South American countries. and Europeans! and there has never been a water that did not give me a new microorganism! I always get something new and I have to classify it ... But today is Different ...😣😶
I like challenges, I always want to discover new things to spend hours in the book of "freshwater microorganisms" identifying what I get! Since I was little I loved to play that I was a scientist and that I studied everything that surrounds me! But today I did not think that an animal could measure my intellectual capacity and that it would be a challenge for me! while walking in the park my head began to work, imagine, think, and I saw these water tanks, it was obvious that the water was stagnant and this medium is the ideal way to find organisms!😍🤔
So I took my two test tubes out of my backpack and took two water samples in the two water tanks at different locations, I wanted to see if the water that was closer to algae had more microbiological load than the one that is taken in a end of the tank! ready my work was done, I closed my backpack and went to my house, here the story becomes more and more interesting! it was time to use my microscope!👀😱
MY WORK AREA👨🏫🧫🔬/MI AREA DE TRABAJO💻📷🧬
As you can see, my work area is always ready to tell my stories, it is ready for action! It is very important for me to have everything organized and clean because a disorganized work area can cause accidents, and we do not want to damage samples or any accessories! or worse, our work tool (microscope), my lenses are ready, take one 10X and the other 25X, also I have a 2X lens that multiplies my field of vision by 2!😮🦾🧠
Many microscopic organisms are resistant and have a very high tolerance level, some can resist changes in temperature, others are more sensitive and sudden changes in the environment end up killing them! The movements inside the test tube make a difference in what I am going to observe. You know why? Over time I made the mistake of stirring the water with very abrupt movements and when I looked in the magnifying glass I observed parts of organisms that had been detached, others died, so I imagined, a stagnant water is not a "river" now I always make movements very delicate circular! this to raise the organisms that live at the bottom of the tube!😮😮
I don't have work hours but I like to work more at night, it is relaxed, there is no noise on the street or in my house, so I can work comfortably and stay at the microscope for a few hours! I usually take a few pauses so as not to tire my eyes! With the naked eye I can tell which of the two tubes are more interesting and it was OBVIOUS the tube near the algae contained more life, I could see some very small organisms swimming through the tube! And that was the tube I took to look at number 2.😮🤔
I was ready, it was time to move on to the second step, prepare my slide and my coverslip, I always wipe these accessories with a clean cloth to remove any dirt such as dust or grease that could interfere with my data collection! I already imagined the amount of rotifers, flagellated organisms I was going to get in this very dirty water!😮😮
I very carefully slide my dropper into the tube and take a drop of water from the middle and top! I want to take as many organisms as possible and for this I use higher levels of depth, deep down I am not interested because when I do the circular movements I should not get anything in the deepest part because everything is suspended!😣😮💧💧
This is where my imagination begins to fly, in this last step is when every scientist becomes excited and begins to feel anxiety, we want to place the drop of water on the "stage" and begin to photograph any type of creature that appears in the eyepiece!🙋♂️👨🎓
Dear diary: 10/17/2021, 9:58 am I mounted my water sample and then I started with the observation under a 20x magnification. It is my smallest objective, I want to see organisms with a wide image, and immediately I get some algae green, many diatoms that move involuntarily through the sample, I do not see flagella, when I consult my book "freshwater microorganisms" I can identify some😲
Following my intuition and experience the closer I get to the algae, the more organisms I come across, I am not referring to hundreds or thousands, I am describing millions of microorganisms suspended in a single drop of water! and wow! I can't imagine how many billions or trillions of organisms are in that water tank! So far I have not registered any new individuals for me!🙇♂️🤓
Go how microscopy evolves, I remember in 2002 I was seeing microscopic life with such a simple phone and it was so difficult to photograph because it was always moving, a phone with I don't know? 10mp? wow! Today I have access to universal mobile phone supports that give me a perfect field of vision and even allow me to record my discoveries on video!🧬😱
I think I will have to ask for help to identify this organism! I am in doubt if it is some Anopheles, Mochlonyx, Psychoda. A larva of some animal? a larval stage? some parasite? I have an intuition about some plateau! I don't know what to look for to find this monstrous alien!😱😨
TURN OFF THE LIGHTS👨🏫🧫🔬/APAGUEN LAS LUCES💻📷🧬
Wuow, I feel floating in a place without gravity, here nature has given me a very low blow, what a beautiful specimen, without light it is something indescribable, you do not know how interesting it is to see how all its organelles work externally and internally! this is where my diary speaks for itself "IT IS BECAUSE OF THESE EXPERIENCES THAT I LOVE TO DO SCIENCE"💁♂️🙋♂️
I close my experience today 10/17/2021 at 12:00 making it clear how the depth of the water is a crucial external factor for the evolutionary scale of microorganisms, it was interesting to see some mosquito larvae at this time of year, it will be the global warming a factor that alters the ecology of animals? uhm .... Interesting .... Evolution also surprised me seeing a very complex small organism that until today I CANNOT IDENTIFY ....😁😁
