CLASSIFYING SALTWATER🔬 MICROSCOPIC ORGANISMS🧠

avatar
If you think you have seen everything, then you have to prepare to see some species of micro-macro organisms that are common in salt water and that you have probably never seen in your life! Although they are scary, they all have an important role in the saltwater ecosystem, many are food for the trophic chain, others are decomposers and some are photosynthetic! and well some are predators of other organisms !!!😮😮

In my store there is a product that comes as frozen food for aquariums, and that serves as food for fresh and salt water fish, it is called "MYSIS", but what is MYSIS? What does that word mean? Well, while I was taking my salt water sample from an aquarium that I had set up last year, the first thing I captured was a very small organism! LET'S SEE IT!🤔😮
VAMOS A VERLO!🤪🤯

img_20210904_015117.jpg

If suddenly you are observing your aquarium and you see a small organisms pass at a great speed then you may be seeing a MYSIS, basically the misids are cosmopolitan we observe them all over the world from salt water to brackish water, there are more than 400 species of organisms distributed in this fantastic family, Biologically they are grouped in the class (crustaceans) so we can define them as small shrimp-like organisms with a very low mass weight so the density of the water pushes them to the surface and they have to be constantly swimming to the bottom of the sea!😁😁

img_20210904_015204.jpg

img_20210904_015254.jpg

They are very interesting animals that filter plant detritus and other animals are basically their main source of food, they prefer to live at the bottom of the sea to avoid wasting energy when trying to fight against the density of the water that pushes them up! your mouth is the structure where the feeding takes place!😁😁😮😮🤔🤔🤔

Trying to understand the Biology of these animals is not easy, they are very few studied, it is believed that they are very old and that they were frozen in the ice ages, until they conquered various ecosystems! because? easy because some species breathe through gills and others breathe through their shell that consists of capillaries that absorb O2, we can summarize them as evolutionary machines!😲😲

It caught my attention while I was investigating about it and how resistant they were, I subjected it to various temperatures in the same water and it did not suffer any damage, also when I took them from the water sample some were out of the water, so I noticed that they could retain oxygen for a long time out of the water!😮😮

NO!! not a starfish! it seems but it is not! Do you know what organism is this ??? .... That's right, colleague, this is a photo of an ophiuroids, they are grouped in class (echinoderms) and there are around 2005 species distributed in the world! These animals have 5 arms that grow around the central disk, which is the one we can see in the photo!😃😃

img_20210904_020640.jpg

img_20210904_020747.jpg

This is how its five arms around the central disk is the most relevant characteristic so as not to confuse it with the famous starfish, the locomotion is thanks to the arms, they do not have suction cups and they are surrounded by thorns!😶😶

img_20210904_020748.jpg

img_20210904_020809.jpg

The central disc is important for this animal because inside there are some sacs that intervene in respiration, it also has plates around it that act as small jaws, its mouth also acts as an excretory system and expels waste there! many species have a male and a female and the reproduction is sexual expelling the gametes to the outside!🧠🦾🦿

Their ecology is well known, they live between stone crevices in the water, they prefer places away from light, they can feed on suspended particles but some are predators that have the ability to capture small fish with their tentacles!😶😶😋😋😋😋😋😋

I present to you the terror of the saltwater aquarium, the famous fire worm, a very unpleasant animal with a body full of thorns and a dark appearance! These animals are from the Amphinomidae family, they are only marine, they can measure up to 15 centimeters and do you know why they call them "fire worms"? Well, I invite you to touch one .... You will feel that your skin burns due to the damage caused by its skin!🐛🐛🐛

With the naked eye we cannot see anything in our sample of seawater, I wanted to do an experiment looking at water under the microscope with algae and another without algae! with a magnification of only 5x we cannot even observe organisms in detail but I can see things moving, slowly and quickly!😍😍

I want to clarify that for the identification of microorganisms I use the reference (Atlas of organisms / Heinz, Dieter, omega editorial, 1987) As you can see when I use the 50x objective we come across diatoms in various ways! What are they? because diatoms are unicellular organisms, bone microalgae, which are part of the phytoplankton and which serve as photosynthesizers in bodies of water in addition to serving as food for other species!👨‍🏫👨‍🎓

img_20210904_023311.jpg

picasion.com_4d0c4954cec237bbd5df2febccbb3b2b.gif

In this short video we can see a diatom that moves in the water, although it does not have a flagellum, this particular species does not have its own movement, some can move through contractions, with this I can identify the species, but at the bottom of the sample we also see an organism that moves using flagellum!😃😃

This is another example of how algae can live in colonies, for example here we see two individuals in colonies, identifying the species is not easy! but we can summarize that it is a kind of red algae that is also part of the phytoplankton and fulfills the same role as diatoms.💖💥💥

This would say that it is the main group of microorganisms of the protists, the famous ciliates group more than 3000 species, they are cosmopolitan, this particular species if you see the photo and the video is like seeing a plant, which moves and traps its meal!😮😮

VERY SMALL ORGANIZATIONS🧠👨‍🎓👨‍💻

picasion.com_42ffa84714bdc40f35267d457a964e4c.gif

If you look at the GIF you will be able to see the movement of small organisms that my microscope cannot capture, they are so small that even using 100x I can not see them!😮🤯

We can observe some species of flatworms, they are flattened marine worms😮😮

Do you see this organism as it has a "tail"? well this is an organism with a flagellum!😮

dd.jpg

These famous algae are known to have their own movement, they have a scourge in the video you can see the movement in detail! part of the phytoplankton are large photosynthetic organisms.😉💖💖💖💖💖💖💚💚💚💚💚

FAST MOVING MICROORGANISMS 🧠👨‍🎓👨‍💻

dd.jpg

These were undoubtedly my favorites, I just observed them around the algae and they are salt 😲water mites, they have 8 legs and therefore they can acquire a very fast movement and in any direction!💥

Ok my friends now the situation got interesting, he was observing two organisms that seemed to interact for a few minutes, my question is: are we seeing a budding? Are you exchanging genetic material? ..... If my experience does not fool me, we are in the presence of an asexual reproduction!😮
WHAT DID WE LEARN/ QUE APRENDIMOS🧠👨‍🎓👨‍💻

img_20210905_164419.jpg

We learned that there is enough life in a drop of water to fill many cities, that we can find interesting microscopic life in samples of salt water from aquariums, in addition to highlighting that the most complex organisms were observed in algae, and that the simplest ones such as diatoms around!😍

¡Hola!.

¡Buenas vibras!.
