There is a difference between spotting and bleeding, the problem is that majority of humans usually confuse the two, and proper clarification will help reduce panic amongst several pregnant women. As a pregnant woman, spotting is characterized by a few drops of blood in the underwear, the blood from spotting is nothing to get worried about since it would not even create any attention through a cloth but, when there is a case of virginal bleeding, then it is something to really get worried about.
Bleeding is definitely more serious than spotting because you will need a sanitary pad over here and when a pregnant woman is bleeding, it is important to speak with a medical expert immediately without wasting any time.

A woman who is bleeding during pregnancy may not compulsorily have anything to worry about;
The cervix becomes extremely soft and there may be a few cases of virginal bleeding here.

In most cases, the complications with bleeding during pregnancy are often linked with the trimester of the pregnancy, let's find out how?

During the first trimester of the pregnancy, there is often a commonly reported cause of bleeding or spotting and there might not be a need to panic just yet because it may be a case of implantation bleeding. Implantation bleeding occurs when a fertilized egg is found implanted in the wall of a pregnant woman's uterus which causes light bleeding, this symptom is a very common one amongst pregnant women often considered as one of the early signs of pregnancy.1

There are however cases when brows should be raised;

  • Infection: When the pregnant woman has a sexually transmitted infection, there is a possibility of experiencing bleeding.

Molar pregnancy: This is a very rare and dangerous condition, instead of having the baby grow inside the uterus, an abnormal tissue grows in its stead, the tissue grown is also a cancerous one which means it has the capacity to spread to other parts of the body.

  • Miscarriage: Some women experience a miscarriage during the first trimester which usually begins with light bleeding and then graduates into heavy bleeding and of course, a terrible cramp pain follows suit.

  • Ectopic pregnancy: This is usually a serious and life-threatening situation because instead of having the baby formed in the uterus, it is formed outside the uterus like the fallopian tube and this is usually an extremely difficult situation if not handled appropriately.

The complications associated with bleeding attached with the first trimester of pregnancy is not even as severe as the complications in the second and third trimesters respectively, because at this point the baby is getting more formed and the mother is looking forward to finally holding her baby already while the body is getting ready to do the same.

  • Placental abruption: This condition has the placenta being detached from the wall of the pregnant woman's uterus, this condition is extremely dangerous for both child and mother.

  • Placenta previa: In this case, the placenta is found covering either part or all the cervix of the pregnant mother.

  • Miscarriage: Pregnancy could still be lost even after 20 weeks of carrying the child, the cases are usually recorded as that of stillbirth.
  • Preterm labor: Certain complications arise for the pregnant woman who gets forced into labor before the speculated delivery period.

  • Uterine rupture: The previous scar gotten by a pregnant woman during an initial c-section could tear open during the period of a new pregnancy, the uterine rupture could pose a serious danger to both child and mother and in cases like this, an emergency c-section is often required. 2

  • RH Disease: In this case, the mother and baby's blood are found to be incompatible, this health condition could lead to a serious crisis for the child and even death.

What you should do.

I understand that you are in a state of panic and confusion after seeing the blood, but do not put yourself at risk of getting high blood pressure, you simply need to call your doctor first and explain what your experience is to him, make use of a sanitary pad in order to identify the weight and color of the blood. The color and how heavy the blood flows would be needed by the doctor in order to identify the level of the problem and probable solution.

Abstain from sex as long as the bleeding persists in order to avoid further complications.

You may need to stay off work for some time until you get back on your feet.

You may be advised to avoid exercising or getting engaged in any form of strenuous activity during pregnancy.

You may be placed under medication to help keep you and the baby safe, some pregnant women are even placed on hospital stay for appropriate monitoring. 3
