The Science behind the Absence of Proper Sleep (Insomnia).

Growing up to watch my Mum go through nights of sleepless nights always had me bothered, knowing her to be a woman who works extremely hard all through the day and then not getting enough sleep at night just gives me so much to worry about. It was really bad to the extent that medications could not even get her to rest well at night. Considering the fact that someone really special to me had to go through this serious health condition, I decided to make cogent research on this topic and help those who might be going through a similar medical condition understand what they are fighting and what should be done to overcome the problem.

Sleep is an extremely crucial aspect of a person’s life, getting a night of good sleep helps the brain and overall body metabolism function appropriately. The inability to get appropriate sleep hours is described as a medical condition known as insomnia. Not being able to sleep properly at night when a large percentage of people are resting or waking up abruptly during sleep hours is a serious indication of insomnia.

Causes of Insomnia.

While some sleep disorders may be simple and could be cured by paying attention to ourselves and our health, some sleep disorders require a serious level of medical attention.

• Stress.

The first and most common cause of this sleep inability is usually stress. Stress can arise from putting in an extreme effort either from work, school, or even relationships. Different body types respond to stress in different ways, a lot of people who go through extra stress usually have issues coordinating their physical and mental health, this reason leads to the inability to have a proper time to sleep.

• Sickness and pain.
During certain health conditions, the body may feel extremely uncomfortable and restless which could result in the inability to get a good night's sleep. Some sicknesses could even lead to severe pain making the person involved experience serious difficulty during sleep.

• Medications.
Drugs react differently to people’s bodies, there are certain drugs that will automatically result in sleeplessness in patients. This is a good reason why the details of medications taken should be discussed with your doctor during a visit.

• Irregular sleep patterns.
Getting so much sleep during the day could result in not being able to sleep at night. This is a sleep disorder that can be controlled by a simple lifestyle change.

Medical sleep disorders.

• Restless leg syndrome.
This is a condition that could result in a difficult sleeping experience, an uncomfortable feeling is usually triggered in the legs which will usually create the urge to move the leg while sleeping, and this could result in a regular jerk during sleep hours.

• Obstructive sleep apnea.
This condition is characterized by paused breathing while sleeping at night, this will cause the person involved to wake up from sleep abruptly and usually with a choking sound.

How to diagnose the presence and levels of sleep disorders.

As mentioned earlier, there are different stages and levels to sleep disorders. In order to however clarify the stage of sleep disorder, it is best to book an appointment with your doctor. During the appointment to the doctor, ensure to completely open up to the doctor by leaving no stone unturned.

You might also experience other problems like pain or depression, be sure to mention this during your appointment with the doctor as this will help the doctor understand the level of sleeping disorder and advise you accordingly on the best way to go about the treatment.

Treatments for sleep disorders.

The solution to sleep disorders begins with the identification of the causes of the sleep disorders. With the source of the problem being identified, it will be easier to find a solution to this sleep disorder condition.

Change in lifestyle.

Having caffeine and alcohol a few hours before bedtime could be one of the reasons behind insomnia, avoiding the intake of both caffeine and alcohol a few hours before bedtime will help improve sleep quality at night.
Reduction in the time slept during the day will go a long way to help the body rest appropriately at night. Research has shown also that sleeping in a cool darkroom will help the body rest better.

Having control over your bedtime is also a great way to have a better sleep experience, when you have a sleep routine just like you have a work routine, your body adapts to the system and reduces issues associated with having a good rest.

Seek medical help.

Speak to your doctor who will easily help you identify the possible cause of the problem and then prescribe medications that will provide solutions to the problem.

Conclusion.

Sleeplessness could be a very serious condition and it should be treated as soon as possible before it extends into an extreme case. My Mum’s case could be a result of extreme stress and unfortunately, she does not seem to be able to handle that for the main time. I sincerely hope that very soon, I will be able to bring her over to my place and help work with her to get over this condition even if it means speaking with an expert.
