The image of this abandoned American military plane on the shore of this black sand beach in Iceland has a little post-apocalyptic touch, but the story behind it and especially the hype behind it is even more interesting.

The crash of this plane happened on a very cold afternoon in 1973, a couple of peasants from the area was on their farm, located in southern Iceland, doing their normal tasks, when they noticed a plane crash in the margins of their land. Both, wanting to help the possible survivors, but above all with more curiosity, decided to inspect the scene, about 5 km from their home, more however due to the weather conditions, they took a long time to reach the place, in Sólheimasandur beach.

Almost 50 years have passed since all that, and the shell of that fallen plane is still there, full of bullet holes, on that beach with black and desolate sand, whipped by the icy winds of southern Iceland, but something else Strange still happened a few years ago, Thousands of tourists visited these beaches to appreciate their remains.

And it is that this C-117 plane has become in part, a celebrity of that Scandinavian country, people from all over the world come to it to play, photograph it and take video on it, although no one seems to really know what caused this plane will crash on the shore.

The most popular theory behind this is that a pilot accidentally changed the wrong fuel tank or simply ran out of fuel, causing it to crash. Likewise, the date of this event is not known exactly, since the locals and the newspapers of the time do not agree.

Although the real story is a bit more real and even more science, than just relying on the human error factor. Well, Iceland is not the Bermuda triangle for US military aircraft, because in just 32 years of military activities in the area (1941 - 1973) there were 384 accidents, which means an absurd amount of one accident every 31 days.

Como se ve el avión en perfecto estado / It is how It looks the plane in perfect shape.

Eliott Stein, an American journalist conducted an investigation into what happened to the aircraft, and concluded that the sudden drop in temperature (-10 ° C), the fast gusts of wind and the carburizing of the ship, caused both engines of the ship will freeze.

The plane was bound for Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest glacier, which upon impact would cause the instant death of all crew members. Gregory Fletcher, a 26-year-old pilot with just 21 hours piloting C-117 aircraft, decided to take command and decided in the first instance to try to land the ship at sea.

After a few seconds, he managed to visualize the area, seeing the seashore and the black sand of the area, so he decided to change his destination. Luckily for the team, the sand was frozen by the extreme low temperatures of the place, so it functioned decently as a landing strip.

Part of the aircraft was smashed, but all the crew came out alive from that horrible experience. Only an hour later a team would arrive to help them and to recover as many pieces that could be reusable from that plane. Fletcher would earn a bronze star in aviation for that action.

And there you have it, that is the true story behind that plane off the coast of Iceland, although something remains to be added, the couple who saw the accident did arrive at the scene, but for their fortune, or bad luck, just They were achieved with the fact that the US air force was disarming the C-117 and abandoning the shell that has inspired so many stories.
