The Koh Pen bridge has a great curiosity, and that is that it is assembled and rearmed every year according to the rainy or drought season. Although in recent years the usefulness of this bridge has been put in check by the construction of another bridge in the area by the local government.

And it is that this bridge represents the change that Cambodian society has undergone over the years, facing the new with the more traditional, being an attraction for the thousands of tourists who visit the area every year. In addition to being very resistant, not only people can cross it on foot, but also bicycles, motorcycles, cars, and even trucks every day.

The passage through this bridge is not free, residents pay $ 0.025 to cross it, while tourists need to "donate" $ 1 to cross it, being a very important source of work and income for the community, being able to produce from 200 to 500 $ daily.

Its construction process also represents a challenge, different men from neighboring towns are dedicated to the titanic task of assembling and disassembling this bridge every year.

The construction of this architectural work begins with the placement of bamboo poles in the river stream, which, due to its low flow, represents a good support point for its construction. Then the surface of the bridge is built, adding different layers of bamboo canes horizontally, ending with the placement of different posts or pole at different angles, to give it greater support.

All this is only reinforced only with wires that are intertwined between the posts, functioning as cable ties, completing the assembly in a matter of just one month.

Walking this bridge is not such a simple task, since it has different slopes and because of the qualities of bamboo, it can be somewhat slippery and hectic. At night, different bulbs illuminate the path until the sunlight comes out again. In the rainy season, the bridge is dismantled due to how unsafe it can be, with a ferry being in charge of taking people between the banks.

In the end, everything has its reward, since we will go from the Kampong Cham region (Continental Cambodia) to the island of Koh Pen, where the rural life of this Southeast Asian country is still breathed.

Here we will find the community of Kaoh Mitt, a town that is characterized by the fact that the doors of each are of different colors, composing a very colorful and warm landscape, in addition to the fact that even the most humble dwellings are adorned with flowers and well-kept gardens.

The general landscape is not out of place at all, its bamboo forests and banana trees surround the rice fields, giving a very characteristic touch to this traditional Cambodian town.

At the end of the summer and with the rains as a threat, the inhabitants of the place disassemble the structure with their own hands, storing the bamboo material for the following summer.

This tradition has been followed in the Asian country for generations, only being interrupted during the Cambodian Civil War, which took place between 1967 and 1975. Although, as I mentioned at the beginning, the government of Cambodia in 2017 ordered the construction of a cement bridge in the area, which has sown fear among the locals who see how this tradition of weaving bamboo canes as a means of survival, both commercial and social, may be living its last years.
