We all hear words like nanoparticles, nanomaterials or nanorobots every day, but sometimes we are not very clear about what this entire nano world entails that we can group within the term nanotechnology.

Todos oímos a diario palabras como nanopartículas, nanomateriales o nanorrobots, pero a veces no tenemos demasiado claro que conlleva todo este mundo nano que podemos agrupar dentro del término nanotecnología.

To begin with, I think we should try to imagine the nano world; the prefix nano means 10E-9 (billionth) so nanometer means billionth of a meter or, what is the same, we take one of the divisions of a common rule (1mm), divide it into a million parts and isolate one of them .

Para empezar creo que debemos intentar imaginar el mundo nano; el prefijo nano significa 10E-9(milmillonésima) por lo que nanómetro significa milmillonésima de metro o, lo que es lo mismo, cogemos una de las divisiones de una regla común(1mm) lo dividimos en un millón de partes y aislamos una de ellas.

In 1959 the Nobel Prize in physics Richard Feynman in a conference entitled “There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom” defined for the first time a process to be able to manipulate atoms and molecules individually, using extremely precise elements to build atom-by-atom systems.

El carbón por ejemplo, en su modalidad más conocida es una piedra negra que utilizamos para quemar, sin embargo si sacamos unas rodajas de carbón nanométricas obtenemos el grafeno que no es más que una lámina de carbono de un átomo de espesor.

I suppose I don't need to comment on the differences in the characteristics of each one of them, while carbon is something damned that will end humanity, graphene seems to be the panacea.

Supongo que no hace falta que os comente las diferencias en las características de cada un de ellos, mientras el carbón es algo maldito que acabará con la humanidad el grafeno parece ser la panacea.

The applications of nanotechnology are many and varied, wastewater treatment, nanosensors for the detection of toxic or harmful substances, energy production and storage systems, nano-transport of drugs, cosmetics, data storage and a lot more.

Las aplicaciones de la nanotecnología son muchas y variadas, depuración de aguas residuales, nanosensores para la detección de sustancias tóxicas o dañinas, sistemas de producción y almacenamiento de energía, nanotransporte de fármacos, cosmética, almacenamiento de datos y un sinfín de cosas mas.

All this without forcing the imagination because, if not all, at least most of these things are already working and we are at the beginning so this will be, in the short-medium term, yet another of the technologies that will make us hallucinate in the next decade.

Todo esto sin forzar mucho la imaginación pues, si no todas, al menos la mayoría de estas cosas ya están funcionando y estamos en el comienzo por lo que esta será, a corto-medio plazo, otra mas de las tecnologías que nos harán alucinar en la próxima década.
