I guess this is connected with the fact that very young children are fragile relative to most diseases. I imagine that in many case, when consequences of a disease could be mild for older children or adults, they could hit a very young baby very hardly. I therefore don't see this as specific to enteroviruses. However, I may be too naive here (the topic is definitely out of my league).

Well, we can observe, that Enteroviruses must not be the total cause of children's sickness. There are also responsible factors which contribute to this situation. But I think enteroviruses seem to be more susceptible to children than others.
