This blog shares a scary news. I thought viruses usually die on material surfaces. Do we know how general is this finding? To which extent does it generalise to viruses of any kinds?

Yes, you're right. But as far as this is a new finding, those who led the research highlighted that those viruses without a coat (rotaviruses and noroviruses)are able to persist and survive while attaching themselves to microplastic.
