The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) recently detected something interesting. While its primary goal might be detecting asteroids on a collisions course with Earth it isn't limited just to that. It found a new comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) that is slowly closing its distance to the Suna and getting brighter.

The comet is getting brighter every day and it even exceeded the expectations of astronomers and if it will continue doing so even in the coming weeks it should become visible to the naked eye sometime mid-April. In the Northern hemisphere, it will appear very high over the horizon in the Camelopardalis Constellation (also known as the Giraffe Constellation) and over time it will move to the Perseus Constellation.

And if its brightness will rise even as April turns into May it could become practically unmissable. It may even become the second brightest object in the sky – right after the Moon itself. This would likely make C/2019 Y4 into one of the most-watched comets in years.

Now we only have to hope that this comet is not the harbinger of doom. And if it is, well, hopefully only that Doom: Eternal is truly eternal.
