MEGA Might Be Our Way Towards The Stars

The MEGA engine uses a controversial interpretation of Einstein’s theories based on the Mach’s principle. It’s probably not going to work, but if it will, we will travel among the stars.

So many people look into this sky and are sad because they will not have the chance to explore and tame all those amazing worlds we know are out there just because they are too far away. As we live in the empty periphery of our galaxy and math which tells us how fast we can travel is just relentless. But if we had an engine that could propel us at great speeds, everything would be different.

And it’s not like we are not trying. For example, recently, a physicist named Jim F. Woodward from the California State University came up with an engine based on the vibrations of tiny crystals. When you send electricity into these crystals they vibrate ten-thousand times per second. He calls it the Mach-effect gravitational assist drive or “MEGA drive”. This MEGA engine supposedly doesn’t need anything other than electricity so theoretically, we should be able to say goodbye to the heavy and bulky fuels we need currently.

The very base of Woodward’s concept lies in the fact that the MEGA-drive ship would accelerate very slowly over a long time. This should theoretically allow it to reach speeds not that far from the speed of light. All it would need is a good, reliable nuclear reactor that would provide the electricity.

But it all has a problem. It relies on physics that are at the very least – controversial. The MEGA engine should use the Mach’s principle. This is an old and somewhat vague hypothesis that says that inertia is caused by the gravitational effects of surrounding matter. Even if it is very far away. But this is simply incompatible with our current theories about gravity.

Nonetheless, Woodward is not giving up. He has been working on his MEGA engine for more than 30 years. In 2017, he even got funding from the Innovative Advanced Concepts from NASA. And they even had results. They created a concept of an unmanned (and very strange looking) cosmic ship called SSI Lambda which would utilize 1,500 MEGA engines.

And perhaps most interestingly, recently they had success when the newest model of their MEGA engine did create significant thrust. But other scientists remain skeptical. Yet they say, if it somehow worked, it would be amazing. Now, Woodward and his coworkers are planning to send a smaller version of the MEGA engine into orbit and see whether it works out there in space.

Interesting article. Machs principle has been debated since before Einstein. Even einstein pondered it deeply.

I think theres merit in machs principle and perhaps a thruster uding it is possible. But you're still looking at six year or so just to get to proxima. Assuming you're not traveling at light speed or close to it a significant amount of time your enroute. Then what a few months on station and then another six years round trip. Its still pretty impractical.

I think looking at machs principle in a different way would be more useful. Like what if you thwart it entirely. Obsfucate your reference frame so in a way the surrounding universe doesnt really catch on that you're moving. A decoupling in a way. If the universe doesnt realize youre moving does it then matter how fast you actually move or accelerate?
