Ghosts from the quantum world are finding their place in the macroscopic world as physicists managed to tame the Casimir Effect to manipulate with macroscopic objects.

The Casimir Effect is one of those strange things that exist because of quantum mechanics. It is caused by the existence of virtual particles and anti-particles. These suddenly appear from the veils of non-reality into our world only to vanish almost immediately. But, while the Casimir Effect is mysterious, it also brings energy. And thus we could use it to our benefit.

Researchers from the University of Western Australia and the University of California, Merced combined their forces to force the Casimir Effect to do their bidding. The study that describes what they achieved was recently published by the journal Nature Physics.

According to Michael Tobar – one of the leads of the study – their research provides a new way to manipulate macroscopic objects without coming into contact with them. Previously, the Casimir Effect was almost purely kept to academic grounds but because of their research, it could become the new hot thing in many modern industries.

If we could measure the strength of the Casimir Effect and use it to manipulate macroscopic objects we will increase the sensitivity of many devices while at the same time reducing the mechanical energy losses. That could bring a huge impact on both science and technology.

The Casimir Effect exists everywhere. In your room, in the center of the Sun, in the was cold depths of the Universe. But, from what we know, many more virtual particles and anti-particles are being created whenever the temperature rises. This is great for us, because while we do not consider the temperature we live in very high compared to the temperature that the vast majority of the Universe exists it is insanely hot. This gives us a good chance to actually use the Casimir force.
