There is a good chance that the disinfection gels in your area are sold out. Sometimes even the materials to make them as well. But if they aren't – here is how to make you own.

Many shops and e-shops that provide construction and other consumer chemistry supplies are seeing giant amounts of traffic. But sadly, many of them are starting to be sold out. This is the same for pharmacies and drug stores all over the world. There is just no more disinfection gel left and the same goes for the supplies to make it.

But if you are still capable of getting the supplies – here is how to make your own disinfection gel. Well, it's not really gel more of a viscous fluid. But still useful as you can easily put it into a bottle with a spray head. You can find many recipes on how to make disinfection gel online but we will use the one provided by the World Health Organization and enhance it a little.

What Are You Going To Need?

  • 752 milliliters of isopropyl alcohol (99% - pure, no additives)
  • 42 milliliters of hydrogen peroxide (3% - common disinfectant from a pharmacy)
  • 15 milliliters of glycerol (980% - pure, no additives)
  • 192 milliliters of distilled/overcooked water

This will be enough to make 1 liter of the disinfectant. The main component is isopropyl alcohol – this will be the virus killer. The hydrogen peroxide will help and increase the protection from pathogens –, especially bacteria.

To make the disinfection viscous liquid, you just add all the components into a bottle/container. Then just mix well.

IMPORTANT

First test a small amount of the liquid on your hands. The recipe is stronger than many commonly used disinfectants and cosmetic products. If you have a strong reaction – DO NOT USE THE PRODUCT FOR YOURSELF!

Adding Comfort With Hand Cream

The glycerol will add a bit of viscosity making the liquid more easily stay on your skin and its pores. But, remember, this won't be your regular gel – for that we would need a stronger thickener. But if you want a thicker solution, you can – for example – mix it with hand cream.

So, since both isopropyl alcohol and hydrogen peroxide are quite aggressive substances we will add pure D-panthenol – something very commonly used in cosmetics. For the 1 liter bottle, you will need about 15 – 20 milliliters of D-panthenol. Use how much you want to depending on how sensitive your skin is.

The main component in D-panthenol – pantothenic acid (also known as vitamin B5) helps the skin regenerate and gives the disinfection gel a feel of softness.

Just Mix And You Are Done

Once you finish mixing the components inside a perfectly clean container it is a good idea to leave the mixture for about a few dozen hours. Also, if you want to make more of the disinfection gel you can easily just multiply the numbers in the recipe.

Remember, washing and disinfecting your hands is one of the most important steps in preventing diseases from spreading. So, even if there is no global pandemic spreading, do it.
