After 120 Years We Found A New Coral Reef

Over 120 years. That’s how long we had to wait before we found another large coral reef. And it’s a big one. It’s higher than the Empire State Building.

This sensational discovery is a reminder of the fact how little knowledge we have about the oceans that cover the majority of the surface of the Earth. And this discovery certainly makes us surprised and excited.

This is the eight known coral reef. And while it is not directly part of the Great Barrier Reef. But it does lie close enough that we can consider it to be part of its family. Perhaps its cousin.

The director of the Schmidt Ocean Institute said that the discovery of the half-kilometer tall reef in this area shows how mysterious the world right next to our coasts is.

The team now plans to give access to updated 3D maps of the ocean floor – including the maps of the new reef – to other researchers. They should then be capable of finding new species and ecosystems.
