🧠⚙️ Hablemos sobre: Memoria 🤓📚 || 🧠⚙️ Let's talk about: Memory 🤓📚

¡Hola queridos usuarios de Hive ✨💕!

Hi dear Hive users ✨💕!

As I mentioned in my publication on Cognitive Processes, cognitive psychology seeks to study and understand the functioning and nature of the human mind, in this way it investigates and inquires about the processes and structures that are immersed in brain activity and that allow us to adapt to our environment. Memory is part of these processes and is also an essential part of human learning, many authors even refer to it as a source of life, today I will talk with a little more depth about it, hoping in this way that the information presented here may be of great interest to you.

🧠 Concepto y Primeras Teorías || Concept and First Theories 🧠

Memory is considered to be the source of our life, it shapes our way of being, feeling and being. It is understood that memory is neither a storehouse nor a library, nor is it a unitary reality as it integrates multiple systems and for this reason it is subject to errors or distortions. Human memory is a complex reality that is conceived as a cognitive process capable of acquiring, storing and retrieving a variety of information (sensations, facts, ideas...), however, attention and perception are of great importance for this process, as they represent the first filter of the information that enters our brain. Memory can be investigated from a neuropsychological point of view, where the brain structures associated with memory are studied, and from a psychological perspective, where it is understood as a mental structure or process.

Among the first experimental research carried out on the study of memory, three authors stand out:

  • Hermann Ebbinghaus: He was the first psychologist to study memory and forgetting, with the particularity that for his studies he used himself as an experimental subject, carrying out this research for 22 years. Ebbinghaus used a system of memorisation that consisted of repeating patterns of three syllables without meaning between them (BAT, SIT, HET), the syllables had to comply with this requirement so that there would not be any type of association that would facilitate the memory of them, in this way he studied the way in which these syllables were retained and recovered in the long term, this is what he called the Oblivion Curve, this being his main contribution to research on memory.

  • George Miller: In 1956 he published an article in which he demonstrated that people retain approximately 5 to 7 elements at a time in short-term memory. Each element is understood as a unit of information that can be a number or a simple letter, as well as a word or an idea.

  • Frederic Barlett: Unlike Ebbinghaus, Barlett used stories instead of syllables, thus introducing the theory of schemas and their influence on memories. Schemas are understood as knowledge that is stored in memory as a product of past experiences, organised as mental representations that reflect the knowledge we possess about objects or events. Piaget, like Barlett, supports this theory and in fact argued that the deformations of memories were due to the evolution of schemas and their properties, thus helping to explain infantile amnesia in the first years of life.

🧠 Tipos de Memoria || Types of Memory 🧠

The above theories provided the basis for the study of memory, however there is a fourth theory of great relevance when classifying the types of memory, the multi-storage theory propuse by Richard Atkison and Richard Shiffrin, which states that there are three memory systems that interact with each other and represent successive stages of information processing.

  • Sensory Memory: As its name indicates, this memory registers the information that comes from the outside, through the different senses, its duration is usually very short and varies depending on the channel through which the information enters, i.e., the MS contains a subsystem for each sense, being the iconic memory in charge of visual information with a duration of 1 second; the echoic memory that is in charge of auditory stimuli and has a duration of 2 seconds; and the haptic memory that receives tactile information. Despite the short time that this memory has to retain the information, it is long enough for it to be transmitted to the next type of memory.

  • Short-Term Memory: Receives information from Sensory Memory and then communicates it with Long-Term Memory, the STM is responsible for organising and analysing incoming information and interpreting our experience. The information encoded by the MCP is mostly visual and auditory, and also has a limited storage capacity, in fact in this type of memory the units of information proposed by Miller come into play, in addition to this the duration in terms of retention is short, at least 18 to 20 seconds. New experiences can alter the memories stored in this memory, which can be considered as a gateway to the MLP, it is conceived as a "warehouse" where the knowledge of relevance to the present situation is integrated, and which may or may not be needed in the future, for this reason it can be found as Working Memory.

  • Long-Term Memory: Unlike LTM, LTM allows for the encoding and retention of an unlimited amount of information, which also has a longer duration, although this fact does not guarantee that the information can be retrieved at a later date. The content of LTM is mostly semantic, as semantic codes allow meaningful relationships to be established between the variety of stored knowledge.

MLP is generally divided into two types: Declarative or Explicit Memory and Procedural or Implicit Memory, the first refers to the storage of information about both facts and events, this memory is usually conscious and generally occurs through language. The second is executed automatically or unconsciously, and refers to skills and knowledge about "how to do things". In addition to this classification, two other types of MLP are distinguished, which are Semantic Memory, which is responsible for storing knowledge of language and culture (historical facts, ideas, concepts, etc.) and Episodic Memory, which stores concrete facts and/or personal experiences, for this reason it is also known as biographical memory.

🧠 ¿Cuáles son sus Principales Alteraciones? || What are its Main Alterations? 🧠

Knowing the structural elements of memory, i.e. the types of memory previously mentioned, as well as the functional processes, which are explained in my publication on Cognitive Processes, allows us to understand in a general way the alterations in memory, which are concentrated in the MLP and are usually known as amnesias, although this is not the only type of alteration.

  • Amnesia: It is understood as the total or partial loss of memory, which may be caused by a neurological problem or by psychological causes. In relation to the time to which the affected memories belong, we speak of anterograde or fixation amnesia when there is an inability to generate new memories or acquire new information after the presence of a brain injury or degenerative disorder, on the other hand retrograde or evocation amnesia, speaks of the inability to remember past events or events occurred after a brain injury, in this type of amnesia unlike the anterograde amnesia the patient can acquire new knowledge, but is not able to retrieve past information.

Within amnesias, senile dementia is also distinguished, where there is a gradual decline of intellectual functions, being memory the first affected function. There are other types of amnesias, but in general these are the most common ones.

  • Hypermnesia: Abnormal or exaggerated increase in the ability to memorize, both briefly and permanently. Cases of hypermnesia are usually quite rare, however there are confirmed records of the presence of such alteration.
