[Eng-Esp] Philosophical anthropology: bridging the gap between philosophy and science

I'm a professor of philosophy, and at the same time, I'm aware of the accusations that philosophy is too abstract and obsolete for today's times. Therefore, always in one of my first classes of philosophical anthropology I highlight the topic that in this post today I share, and it is that in it we can clearly see how in reality philosophy keeps a synergy with science and vice versa, from beginning to end, hence it is the clearest and most accessible bridge to understand the union between philosophy and science.

First of all, let us bring up the fact that from the scientific point of view there are many things we can say about the human being: its physical constitution, chemistry, the reasons for its social being, etc., we can even go back to paleontological studies of its parts, for a better understanding of the origin of our species.

However, and here is a first point of union, all these scientific theories have two points of arrival: one, and the most logical, to recognize their limits and open themselves to an explanation that transcends their traditional scientific and empirical methods, a philosophical explanation (which, it is worth noting, does not have to be religious); the second point of arrival is that if they do not open themselves to another type of argumentation, these same scientific theories end up becoming philosophical positions, by becoming self-conclusive and absolute in themselves.

This is possible because human beings naturally want and seek ultimate (philosophical) answers about everything that surrounds them, and if they do not find or accept them, they turn the penultimate (scientific) answers into their ultimate (philosophical) answers. This is like when I need and I can get a 10 to exempt a class subject but I am satisfied with passing with a 5.

All that has been said up to this point does not aim to undervalue the valuable contribution of scientific studies on the human being, I only intend to delimit the areas too, at the same time, be able to establish the points of convergence and relationship, since we need a point A and a point B to realize it, if we only defend a point A or a point B everything is annulled a priori.

Therefore, the second point of union and relationship is that although we can consider scientific studies on the human being incomplete if they are not complemented by philosophical ones, in the same way, and with the same weight we must also say that it is unthinkable, not to say impossible, to elaborate correct philosophical positions on the human being if there are no solid scientific foundations.

And this is one of the most essential parts of the philosophical study about our being, because, everything starts from the findings, evidence, observations, theories, and achievements of all those sciences that in one way or another deal with the human being in general, to name a few: medicine, biology, sociology, cultural anthropology, etiology, paleoanthropology, among others, all are necessary to speak adequately about man, even from a purely philosophical point of view.

For example, if I want to reflect philosophically on the meaning and reason for the evolution of the human being, I cannot neglect, much less deny the scientific study of evolutionism, starting with the approaches of C. Darwin, but also not losing sight of the contributions of neo-Darwinism and current scientific advances, purifying everything and filtering those scientific theories that are more accurate.
