Diseases has been one of the top most challenge facing human existence. Everyday new forms of diseases keeps coming up.

Today another disease which has been into existence for a while now is beginning to cause increase in mortality rate amongs people more especially in the part of Africa where I came from.

This disease called monkey pox has beginning to raise more concern unlike how it use to be.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 31,799 Monkeypox cases have now been reported across 89 countries as of 12 August

Looking at the value, it simply means that the rate at which people are coming down with this disease is gradually increasing.

Well, today, I am going to be talking on monkey pox and its effect to human, how this disease can be gotten and the necessary preventive measures.

Monkeypox is an infectious viral disease that can occur in humans and some other animals

This disease is gotten by human through animals by a zoonotic virus in the genus Orthopoxvirus.

Monkey pox is of two types, which are the clade one and the clade two type.
This disease can be gotten from animal through handling of infected animal or by the bite of animal.

When this virus is being spread to human, it can eventually gets to another individual by body fluids and airborne route.

The outbreak of monkey pox

Monkey pox was first identified in the democratic republic of congo in a 9 months old boy. Since then, a lot of cases has been globally reported in 11 African countries.

In Nigeria, it has been reported that,

Since 2017, Nigeria has experienced a large outbreak, with over 500 suspected cases and over 200 confirmed cases and a case fatality ratio of approximately 3%. Cases continue to be reported until today

Aside African countries, there are other countries that are still battling with this viral disease. Take for instance the first case of monkey pox outside Africa was in united State where it was linked to be gotten from an infected dog.

Looking at it generally, this viral disease is almost taking over everywhere and should be taken care of.

Monkey pox when affects human has a lot of signs and symptoms which it normally come down with.

At first this viral disease has an incubation period of 6 to 13 days but can also range from 5 to 21 days. This viral disease is of two period. The invasion period and the skin eruption period.

invasion period

This period takes between 0 to 5 days with an intense fever, headache, back pain, myalgia(muscle ache) and lymphadenopathy(swelling of the lymph).

skin eruption

Skin eruption normally takes place between One to three days after the appearance of fever. This eruption is mainly noticed in the face than the other lower extremities.

It also affects the oral mucosa, conjunctivitis and cornea.

Monkey pox and smallpox looks alike that you cannot differentiate one from the other. The only different thing is the swollen gland that do appear at the back of ear and jaw when someone has this virus.

Vaccination

It has been observed that most people who took smallpox vaccine have 85% chances of being prevented from monkey pox virus, reason being that smallpox and monkey pox are from the same class of virus.

Due to this, small pox vaccine is given to most health practitioners to enable them have immunity against any sudden occurrence of monkey pox.

Prevention

Monkey pox virus can be prevented by raising alarm concerning the risk factors associated with someone who has this disease.

Proper explanation should be given to people more especially those in the rural area the things they can do to prevent the rate at which this virus spreads.

In the hospital where these patients are being treated, adequate handling of the patients should be implemented and workers that have received vaccination on smallpox are only permitted to handle any monkey pox patient.

Diagnosis and possible treatment

Monkey pox virus can be diagnose in so many ways.
Firstly, taking a sample from the skin lesson is the preferred laboratory test to be taken when someone is suspected of monkey pox.

Another way by which this virus can be tested is by the help of polymerase chain reaction. Though it has been observed that this virus remains in the blood just for a short time.

Coming to the treatment

In the European Union and the United States, tecovirimat is approved for the treatment of several poxviruses, including monkeypox.[60] BMJ Best Practice recommends tecovirimat or the smallpox treatment brincidofovir as the first line antiviral treatment if required, alongside supportive care (including antipyretic, fluid balance and oxygenation). Empirical antibiotic therapy or aciclovir may be used if secondary bacterial or varicella zoster infection is suspected, respectively

Conclusion

As it stands now, most people suffers from one disease or the other due to there unawareness on the necessary things they can do to curtail the outbreak of some disease.

In some villages today, many people eats a lot of rodents and animals. Most of this animals are under prepared and can possibly result to one disease to the other.

The spread of this virus can actually come down if awareness is being created and people do understand the things they should prevent so as to bring down their chances of getting infected.
