Superfetation: when a second new pregnancy occurs during an initial pregnancy

Pregnancy is referred as the period an offspring takes to develop inside a woman's womb.

It occurs as a result of fusion between the egg of a woman and the sperm cells of a man. When this happens, it takes around one to nine months to give birth before a woman can be pregnant again.

This may actually be sounding strange but it is actually a reality. This Superfetation happens when there is malfunction or abnormality in the human body mechanism. The unlikely event that might happen for Superfetation to take place includes:

Ovulation

On a normal, ovum is meant to be released by an ovary for fertilization to take place. This fertilization turns out to result to a pregnancy. During this period, a hormone is being secreted that prevents a woman from ovulating when already pregnant. But in Superfetation, it seems the hormone is inactive therefore making the woman to ovulate during pregnancy.

The second ovum must be fertilized by a sperm cell

When an egg is released, it requires a sperm cell to fertilize it. This could only be possible when the pregnant mother is having sex. During this period, the sperm cell fertilizes the ovum making a pregnant mother to be pregnant again.

The fertilized egg needs to implant in an already pregnant womb

When the egg has been fertilized, it moves down to the same womb where the other baby is being attached to, making its own attachment which is also known as implantation.

Looking at it critically, it seems impossible getting pregnant while already pregnant. I never believed it could be possible until I had to read more on that.

Superfetation can be noticed by a doctor when he or she observed that the two babies are growing differently at different rate which is known as growth discordance. At times there is always a complications that comes with Superfetation which includes not able to get sufficient blood and nutrient supply unlike the first pregnancy.

Also during delivery, it requires giving birth to the first baby. This may result to giving birth to the second one prematurely as it requires being extremely careful to avoid making a mistake.

Giving birth to a premature baby comes with complications which includes, difficulty in breathing,low birth weight, movement and coordination problem and brain hemorrhage.

A 32-year-old woman who had undergone in vitro fertilization and became pregnant with twins. Around five months later, the woman’s doctor noticed during an ultrasound that she was actually pregnant with triplets. The third fetus was much smaller in size. This fetus was found to be three weeks younger than its siblings. The doctors concluded that another fertilization and implantation took place naturally weeks after the in vitro fertilization procedure
