Today is another day to learn what we have been taught or what we might have had before. I hope this topic would entice you to know more about your environment. Environmental pollution started so many years ago, about 18th century as a result of industrialisation. At the course of building and constructing settlements such as industries and companies, the scientists or rather the engineers failed to envision the negative effects of industrialisation to the ecosystem. Hence, it became a problem to the environment as it leads to the pollution of the ecosystem.

Definition of environmental pollution

As a huge threat to the ecosystem, I would like to define pollution or rather environmental pollution as the process by which substances such as organic waste, sewage, industrial chemicals and waste makes the natural conditions (air water, soil) dirty and harmful to living things in the physical environment. Environmental pollution can also mean a situation or means of inviting contaminants that causes adverse change in the physical environment. To this extent, pollution have some major ways or forms by which it is introduced into the environment. Such forms are as follows:

  • air pollution
    -water pollution
    -thermal pollution
    -light pollution
  • soil pollution &
    -radioactive pollution.

AIR POLLUTION:

This is the contamination of the air by the release of chemicals like nitrogen oxides produced by (motorcycles and lorry), carbon monoxide, chlorofluorocarbons and also particles into the physical atmosphere or lithosphere. Some industrial pollutants such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides also causes air pollution when they are released into the atmosphere.

WATER POLLUTION:

It has cost us our lives. Water pollution is caused by the use of chemicals like gamaline to harvest fish in both look, small or extensive water bodies. The release and discharge of sewages, wastes and domestic wastes in agriculture runoff body of water also pollutes the water. The discharge of chemicals like pesticides and fertilizers can pollute the water and it makes the water harmful to plants and animals;as a runoff water enters the ground.

SOIL POLLUTION:

This mostly happens when there is explosion of chemicals or underground leakage. Poor management of drainage systems can also cause soil pollutions. some of the pollutants of the soil are: have, hydrocarbons, pesticides etc.

RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION:

These occurs during wars, as nuclear weapons are used and it goes to the atmosphere where it emitts alpha and actinides into the ecosystem.

CAUSES OF POLLUTION

Generally, all the forms by which pollution is introduced in the ecosystem is man made. For instance, man pollutes the air from mining, construction, combustion, warfare etc. We can also see that America constitute almost 5 percentage of the world's population but produces 25% of the world's CO2; also generates equivalently 30% of worlds waste. Man through the use of heavy metals for example, chriomium found in batteries and also chlorinated hydrocarbons contaminates the soil. Man uses automobile (motor vehicles) to cause noise pollution.

POLLUTION A HUGE THREAT TO THE ECOSYSTEM/EFFECTS OF POLLUTIONS

This explains the effect of pollution on the physical environment. Pollution therefore affects us on the following:

1.worker/working productivity:

pollution has a great effect on the productivity of the workers. Some studies have shown that it affects both people working indoor and outdoor.

2. On the environment:

pollution is widely found in our environment. for example in the SOIL

  • it becomes infertile and uncondusive for plants and organisms in the soil.
-it causes acid rain and it lowers the power of hydrogen in the soil.

On the WATER

  • it depletes oxygen levels.

On HUMAN
-It can kill humans when the air quality is polluted adversely. -depletion in the ozone layers can cause cardiovascular diseases, chest pain, respiratory diseases etc.

  • when water is polluted, it causes the death of humans due to their intake of contaminated water.
  • contaminated water causes malaria and typhoid.
-some industrial oil spills causes skin disease and rashes.
  • noise pollution increases high blood pressure, loss of hearing and can cause disturbance while sleeping .
Note that in October 2017, a study carried by lancet commission on pollution, states that global pollution kills 9 million people yearly and this is as a result of drinking contaminated water which causes tuberclosis and malaria. Also in 2015 pollution killed nine(9) million people worldwide.

thanks for reading my work..

stay tuned 😍😍....

Dear my young friend @ezeemmanuel , Your article was great. So, what are some ways to reduce pollution?
Are you going to insist on getting rid of all the cars because of the car's exhaust? 😄

(Edited)

I was going to ask the same question haha
Because @ezeemmanuel I wonder what the solutions are that we ourselves can do. Indeed a lot needs to be done by governments, by putting laws into place, etc. But what can we as individuals and as a group of people do to minimize or stop pollution? Looking forward to your next post.
