The abdomen is the area between the chest and the pelvis. The pain that happens on the abdomen can be sharp, dull, intermittent, or radiating (starting at one part and moving to another part). It is called a stomach ache at times.

The cause of abdominal pain is mainly due to inflammatory conditions that affect the organs located in the abdomen. The organs found in the abdomen from right to left and from top to bottom

  • Liver
  • Stomach
  • Spleen
  • Gall bladder
  • Intestines (small and large)
  • Pancreas

Infections are the usual cause of abdominal pain. Viral, Bacterial, or Parasitic infections are known to cause abdominal pain.

What causes abdominal pain?

Abdominal pain can be caused by so many conditions however the most common causes are usually due to infections, tumors, inflammation, obstructive causes, and disorders of the intestine.

Infections that happen in the throat or in the intestine or the blood can lead to organisms entering into the digestive tract. When they enter the digestive tract, they cause damage and this damage is what usually causes pain. There might also change the normal intestine fiction and cause the passage of loose watery stool (diarrhea) or hardening of stool (constipation).

Cramps can be associated with pain on the lower aspect of the abdomen but because the organ that is affected is a pelvic organ (uterus) the pain is usually classified as pelvic. Also because of the close proximity of the pelvis to the lower abdomen, lower abdominal causes of pains may be pelvic in origin.

Other causes that common are, constipation, diarrhea, gastroenteritis, acid reflux (gastric content is regurgitated to the esophagus), vomiting, and stress.

Digestive system disorders that cause abdominal pain are spastic colon, Crons disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, lactose intolerance, and others
Severe abdominal pain can be due to organ tears like in appendix rupture or may be due to inflammation as in appendicitis. Gallbladder stones can block the gallbladder and lead to severe pain just like kidney stones or kidney infections.

CONCLUSION
Abdominal Pain is caused by numerous conditions that affect abdominal organs. Some conditions may cause severe pain that limits daily activity. The person should present to the hospital especially if the pain is very severe.
