Most of us aren't conscious of the fact that we travel both in space and in time, even Einstein's theories of relativity supports this. Well, if you are among those who happened to have made the journey through time to this present and new year (2023), then congratulations. It's isn't easy for the living though, especially with the fact that there are death threatening obstacles both in space and in time or should we say in spacetime. 😁
I hope in the end, this year turns out to be a year of celebration and success for every one of us.

Welcome my friends to another exciting episode of our weekly science and technology reports, which also happens to be the first for this year (2023). So sit back, relax and enjoy.

Everybody alive today came from one African country, according to study

In one of my previous posts, which was last week - Christmas day, i stated that we are one very big family of mother Earth but however, this family is so large that there exists subfamilies. In this report, we would be looking at the subfamily related to we modern humans - Homo sapiens. Modern science, especially evolutionary theory of our origins makes us to believe that we all originated from a common ancestor - which could also be a group, in Africa but until this moment, it isn't known where exactly in Africa modern humans first came from. In this recent report, researchers seem to have found the country and it may surprise you.......read more

Study sheds light on the origin of complex organisms on Earth

Some of us make the mistake of thinking that the theory of evolution explains the origin of life on earth, no it doesn't. Rather, it explains the gradual existence of the multiple but different living organisms from a single primordial source - believed to be a self-replicating molecule like the RNA. How this primordial source came into existence is quite unknown. However, during this progressive changes, we eventually had a very simple cell structure, the corresponding organism is classified a prokaryote - bacterias are an example. For quite a long time now, scientists have been posed with the question of how these simple cells were able to evolve to a complex one - like the cells in our body. One hypothesis is that the fusion between prokaryotes and a certain super-member of the prokaryotes gave rise to the first complex cell (sometimes called eukaryotes). This super-member is known as the "Asgard archaeon".
πŸ™„...Not sure why "Asgard" accompanies the name but I'm sure it's not from Thor's Asgard.😁

To further strengthen the hypothesis, an experiment was carried out and did you know what they found out ?

How A Single Oxygen Atom Can Change A Person’s Sex

Ever heard of the butterfly effect before ?
It's more of a chaos theory thing, an analogy, is when you step on a butterfly now in, say Egypt and in the future (the consequence) it causes a very destructive earthquake in the US. Simply put, very little change in the initial conditions of an evolving system can cause a very large change in the later outcome. Would you have imagined a very harmless action (stepping on the butterfly) could cause an enormous diaster ?
That's one characteristics of chaotic systems - like our weather. In this report, there seems to be an almost similar scenario. According to genetics, individuals with XX chromosomes are females while those with XY chromosomes are males but.....Have you heard of a case were a woman has XY chromosomes ?
This is called a "Swyer syndrome" and how it happens during the development of an embryo looks quite similar to the butterfly effect. Do you wish to know the subtle change(s) that results to this relatively big change ?

First "virovore" discovered: An organism that eats viruses

Viruses are known to cause diseases that seem incurable thanks to their very simple structure and maneuvring abilities. Because of this, I used to think they were uneatable - small but mighty. πŸ˜‚
Virtually every living organisms serve as food for some of their peers except for viruses but recently, my doubt seems to have been cleared. An organism has been discovered that actively feeds on viruses, though not all kinds of viruses......read more

New Measurements of Galaxy Rotation Lean Towards Modified Gravity as an Explanation for Dark Matter

Modern cosmology relies heavily on Einstein's theory of general relativity which happens to be an improved version of Newton's gravitational theory but just like Newton's theory which later encountered problems it couldn't handle with great satisfaction, Einstein's theory too has been challenged. One of the problems it seems not to handle well is the rotation speed/curve of spiral galaxies. In fact, general relativity isn't well tested beyond the scale of solar systems. From the perspective of Newton's/Einstein's theory, the speed of bodies orbiting the centre of the galaxy should increase up to a certain point in space and then decrease beyond this point but that's not what is observed. What is being observed is that the speed of objects orbiting the centre of the galaxy increases to a certain point in space and remains almost constant beyond this point. One plausible explanation is the existence of the so called "dark matter" which general relativity supports but dark matter is yet to be detected. Another plausible explanation is that gravity behaves quite differently from what our current model suggests. This led to the development of another kind of gravitational theory called MOND (Modified Newtonian Dynamics), this theory has been in existence for quite a long time now and it seems to be gaining significant support recently. This is because it appears to be explaining things that neither Newton's nor Einstein's theory can with great satisfaction, though it too has it's own drawbacks. In this recent report however, a new observation seems to support this new theory. The time for Einstein's theory to go to rest maybe near, who knows 🀷 but.....read more

It is here we conclude today's report, have a thoughtful day and till i come your way again next year.

I was quite busy for the last three months, both because of work and due to unexpected and severe personal matters. I am still very busy, but the situation, that will take some time to be fixed, gets better.

At least I have some time to read and say hi on Hive again. I may even try to write something this week (this is not a promise, however) ;)

Cheers!
