Now that the celebrations are over or almost over for some, it's time to forge ahead with our otherwise mundane activities and also be getting ready for another celebration that is to come in the near future. There's a popular and wise saying,

Make hay while the sun shines

Ook, welcome to another episode of our weekly science and technology reports, below are some of the very interesting reports you may have missed from the past week.

Researchers Develop a Device That Can Use WiFi To See Through Walls

Did you know that superman isn't the only person that can see through the walls of our houses from outside, thieves can too but not with x-ray vision. 😎
How then ?
It's simply with a WiFi. In this report, researchers seem to have utilized a "common" loophole of our conventional WiFi networks to design a simple device that can help people see certain objects through our houses from outside - like looking through a glass. If thieves have the knowledge on how to build such device, it could help them identify certain important objects that they can steal from our houses. The researchers also give advice to electronics manufacturers on how to curb the effects of the loophole in WiFi devices. Do you wish to know this loophole and more, then keep reading

Why Kids Are “Smarter”: Study Reveals Explanation for Faster Learning

It would seem that adult humans are better than children humans and a lot of factors are involved, experience, physical maturity, responsibility, problem solving approach, e.t.c. but it's not totally true, though mostly true. There's an aspect of children that adults aren't better than and it has to do with fast learning, this report uses the word "smart" but i see it as more of "neuroplasticity", though they can be related. In this report however, researchers seems to have found strong experimental support, especially how children are able to accomplish such feat...read more

New type of entanglement lets scientists 'see' inside nuclei

We should by now be aware that nucleons such as protons or neutrons aren't fundamental particles but instead made up of more fundamental ones - quarks and gluons. These fundamental particles are never found to be free, they are either confined in composite particles - hadrons, or confined in the form of quark-gluon plasma. The later (quark-gluon plasma) is believed to have existed during the early stages of our universe's evolution shortly the big bang, it can also be observed in a brief moment in particle accelerators such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). In the RHIC, heavy nuclei are accelerated close to the speed of light and smashed against each other, this is how quarks and gluons are produced and studied. But the problem with this approach is that you can't get a clearer picture of how quarks and gluons are distributed in atomic nuclei. In this recent report, researchers seem to have discovered a better way and in doing so discovered another kind of quantum entanglement - yes, this guy again......read more

Cave markings show that Ice Age hunter-gatherers were the first to use a lunar calendar

Calendars are extensions of time telling, they help us plan future events and recollect past events. Our modern calendar is more of a solar calendar, based on the motion of our planet around the sun but there's another kind of calendar, though rarely used and it's called a lunar calendar, it relies on the phases of our moon around our planet. In this report researchers seemed to have found the first set of people to use a lunar calendar. If you have watched the animated movie "ice age", you may have a glimpse of how life was as at the time but keep reading to find out more.

New Research Indicates That Weak Muscles May Speed Up Aging

Older people are more prone to health diseases than younger people but do you also know that people of the same age (born at the same time) can age differently (biological age). This would mean that those who age faster are more prone to age-related health issues. Knowing that your peer is aging faster than you may not be obvious but a recent research seems to have found a strong link between grip strength (muscle weakness) and faster aging but there's a way out if you happen to be among those aging faster based on muscle weakness and it's by......read more

The Power of Lines and Strokes: How Our Brain Recognizes Line Drawings

I believe all of us here can draw any object. Don't tell me you can't, actually you don't have to be talented or be a professional artist to know how to draw an object. At some point while we were children, we made simple but funny drawings of objects. However, have you ever noticed that such drawings usually had lines or strokes as basis even though the object in question may not possess such feature but if we presented the drawing to someone else, the person is able to tell exactly what you have drawn. The question now is, how is the brain able to interpret such kinds of drawings ?
One plausible explanation for this is that our brains identifies the drawing automatically, almost immediately and based on our experience. Another plausible explanation is that our brains first sees the object differently when drawn as lines and then do further processing to decipher the image of the drawing. To know which of the hypothesis was true, an experiment was carried out and did you know what they discovered ?
Ok......read more
