Hidden among the branches of a hemiparasitic plant of the genus Phthirusa, I recently saw a wasp nest of the species Polybia occidentalis. I have seen the nests of this species in the palm-like tree leaves, which, being very tall, made it difficult for me to photograph the nests. As the nest I saw in the hemiparasite, using a ladder I could photograph it, it occurred to me to wait to photograph it initially when it was dawning.

I captured the first photographs when light began to appear in the sky.

The rest of the photographs I captured after noon.

Polybia occidentalis usually builds nests in the morning hours and while the nest is being built, workers engaged in nest building rarely switch activities, although other workers may simultaneously forage for nectar or care for broods.

In the afternoon, workers who had been involved in nest constructing during the morning may engage in non-construction activities. Nest construction involves three tasks: water foraging, pulp foraging, and building. In large colonies, on any given day, these three tasks are performed by three separate groups of worker wasps.

Water-foraging workers leave the nest, fly to the water source which may be standing water, dewdrops or raindrops on vegetation, imbibe water by filling the crop, return to the nest and regurgitate their nestmates. The landing zone of these wasps is above and to the sides of the nest entrance, but they move if necessary, offering regurgitated water until their load is exhausted.

Workers foraging for wood pulp obtain water at the nest from a water-foraging wasp or a builder wasp, then fly to the source of fiber (for example, a dead branch), search by walking to a suitable spot, wet the site with regurgitated water, then scrape a ball of wood fiber using their mandibles and return with it to the nest. As do water-foraging wasps, wood pulp foragers land above and to the sides of the entrance (rarely below). If the load of wood pulp is not taken by a nestmate within a few seconds, the wasp moves first into the nest entrance and then into the construction zone, offering the load to any worker it encounters.

The worker builders move to the landing zone above the entrance, first seeking water directly from a water-foraging wasp or other builder and then pulp from a pulp-foraging wasp or other builder. The worker builders wet the pulp with water and "knead" it. They then subdivide the load by sharing it with other builder wasps, and then move to an area of the nest under construction, search for a building site, and work the wet wood pulp into the nest using their mandibles. Upon completion, they can suck excess water from the newly constructed surface, or you can fan their wings to dry the surface.

Most building activity takes place on the lower part of the nest, where construction of new cells and new envelope proceeds. Smaller amounts of nesting material are used inside the nest to heighten pre-existing cells to keep pace with the growth of larvae in them, and on the upper parts of the outer envelope, where pulp is added to the surface to thicken and strengthen it to bear the growing weight of the nest.

Most foraging wasps specialize in gathering a single material. While active, foragers rarely switch materials, and most of the switches that do occur are between functionally related materials, such as nectar (food materials) or wood pulp and water (nest materials).

Individuals differ greatly in their level of activity. Workers that forage at a high rate specialize in a single material in almost all cases. Specialized and very active foragers comprise a minority of about 33 % of the active foragers in each nest, but provide most of the material.

It should be noted, that if the nest is damaged, food foraging is not affected by the material foraging effort to repair the nest. Workers that respond to nest damage by foraging for wood pulp and water belong to a pool of inactive reserve foragers or workers previously engaged in nest work.

About this species I have written about the behaviors when they swarm and build nests, that is, when they abandon a nest to look for another place to build another nest. I show two photographs and the publication can be read here.

Curiously, although in that publication I commented on various aspects of behaviors of these wasps, highlighting the coordination of three groups of workers specialized in nest building (in another context): two groups that collect wood pulp and water, and a third group that uses them to build the nest, I did not comment on the wasps that remain inactive in the swarm while other foraging wasps search for nectar and the scout wasps search the surroundings for a new nesting site.

When swarming, after several hours, the scout wasps stimulate the rest of the swarm to leave the cluster and follow their pheromone trail to their chosen site. The behavior of the scout wasps is to bump inactive wasps and the frequency with which they do so increases, furthermore, this causes the inactive wasps to begin to change their behavior from being bump to bumping other inactive wasps. Recently activated wasps propagate "bumping" and this is not only an activation stimulus that causes swarm members to depart for the new nest site, but it is contagious, leading to its amplification throughout the swarm.

What happens is that from a very tall palm tree, once a nest of those wasps fell on a pile of leaves and branches, I quickly grabbed it, placed it on a tile of a planter and ran away. The wasps stayed there for a time, and as I was always approaching them, I learned that they can be handled with very slow movements. Eventually they all went away and left the nest empty.
