Tabebuia is one of the largest genera of the Bignoniaceae family, with more than 100 species typical of tropical and subtropical areas. The species Tabebuia aurea, shown in the photographs, is restricted to South America with a wide distribution from Venezuela to Argentina. It is a tree that measures between 10 and 20 meters in height with a crown that is usually asymmetrical with two or three main trunks.

Its branches often grow in irregular curved patterns, which gives the tree an interesting shape, and for this reason it is cultivated for ornamental purposes.

The stem of the tree has a puffy, fissured and corked bark. In relation to the bark, several investigations have been carried out, I will comment on two.

In an investigation in mice, the hydroethanolic extract of Tabebuia aurea stem bark reduced hyperalgesia and neuronal injury induced by the venom of the snake Bothrops mattogrossensis. The effects were attributed to iridoid glycosides, such as catalpol, minecoside, verminoside and specioside present in the bark.

On the other hand, sepsis is an infection-induced syndrome characterized by a generalized inflammatory state that can be caused by infection with bacteria, fungi or viruses, or in the absence of microorganisms is caused by microbial toxins generating a condition known as endotoxemia that can cause hypotension, disseminated intravascular coagulation, tissue hypoxia and death. In this sense, the bark of the stem contains betulinic acid, and it has been demonstrated that this acid, extracted from the bark of the Tabebuia aurea tree, exerts a protective effect with potent anti-inflammatory activity against endotoxemia; in experiments carried out with mice.

An identifying feature of the tree is its palmate compound leaf with 5 or 7 leaflets; each leaflet is 10 to 15 centimeters long, narrowly elliptical, borne on long petiolules.

On many occasions, the leaves often drop just before the flowers appear.

The flowers are very showy, bright yellow, bell-shaped.

The flowers are located in terminal panicles or inflorescences and at blooming time present a brilliant display composed by the multitude of flowers.

The fruits are hanging capsules up to 15 centimeters long, gray or gray-brown, very stiff, oblong in shape, narrow at each extreme.

The fruits that I show in the following two photographs have beak marks from macaws, which use them as food.

Each capsule contains numerous flattened seeds with "2-papery wings", so the plant disperses its seeds with the wind.

Although all of the photographs I captured are of trees grown for ornamental purposes, it should be noted that in a natural environment, they are resistant to flooding and fire because they have developed survival strategies. In the face of floods, they reduce their metabolism and have the capacity to thicken their adventitious roots to withstand oxygen deprivation (anoxia). Trees also survive by thickening their stem diameter, which generates resistance to hypoxia (oxygen depletion). This species, throughout evolution, has undergone adaptations to the occurrence of fire, such as thick bark, fast growth, protection of photosynthetic structures and increased germination power after a fire event.
