Almost a year ago I found three "kapok" trees (Ceiba pentandra) in an urban forest. They were old trees, without spines on their stems and very tall. In one of them I found on the ground a leaf and three immature fruits. Basically, what I wrote about them was a description based on photographs and what I highlighted with photographs was their height and buttresses. The publication can be seen by clicking here.
Hace casi un año encontré en un bosque urbano tres árboles "ceiba" (Ceiba pentandra). Eran árboles viejos, sin espinas en su tallo y muy altos. En uno de ellos encontré en el suelo una hoja y tres frutos inmaduros. I recently walked through another urban forest and found another "kapok" tree. It seemed less tall than the previous ones.
Recientemente anduve por otro bosque urbano y encontré otro árbol "ceiba". Me pareció menos alto que los anteriores.
Its stem had few spines, and its buttresses, or extensions at the base of the stem that support it and keep it from falling over under its weight, were not as large. All this indicated to me that it was a younger tree than the previous ones.
Su tallo tenía pocas espinas, y sus contrafuertes, o prolongaciones en la base del tallo que le sirven de sostén evitando que se caiga por su peso, no eran tan grandes. Todo eso me indicó que era un árbol más joven que los anteriores.
On the ground I only found one young leaf, which as can be seen in the following photograph, its shape is palmate and has six leaflets with a spearhead shape (lanceolate) and at the same time the end is wider than at the base (oblanceolate), where the leaflets join with their short petioles to the long petiole (between my fingers) that joins the tree.
En el suelo solo encontré una hoja joven, que como se aprecia en la siguiente fotografía, su forma es palmada y tiene seis folíolos cuya forma es de punta de lanza (lanceolada) y a su vez el final es más ancho que en la base (oblanceolada), donde los folíolos se unen con sus pecíolos cortos al pecíolo largo (entre mis dedos) que se une al árbol.
At the top of the tree it had many fruits and a large majority no longer had the epicarp or outer part, showing the endocarp or interior, covered with a large mass of light brown fiber surrounding the seeds. A bird was feeding on the seeds, I believe it is a species of the family Psittacidae, known as a parrot.
En la parte alta del árbol tenía muchos frutos y una gran mayoría ya no tenía el epicarpio o parte externa, mostrando el endocarpo o interior, cubierto con una gran masa de fibra de color marrón claro que rodea a las semillas. Un ave se estaba alimentando con las semillas, creo es una especie de la familia Psittacidae, conocida como loro.
On this occasion, the fruits were spreading their seeds. In the fruits the epicarp opens in five parts that fall to the ground (they are dehiscent), leaving on the tree the mass of fibers that is like a silky fluff of cotton. Below I show parts of the epicarp.
En esta ocasión, los frutos se encontraban esparciendo sus semillas. En los frutos el epicarpio se abre en cinco partes que caen al suelo (son dehiscentes), quedando en el árbol la masa de fibras que es como una pelusa sedosa de algodón. Seguidamente muestro partes del epicarpio.
The silky fluff that remains on the tree surrounding the seeds is subsequently dispersed by the wind. Chemically, the fluff is a mixture of mainly lignin and cellulose. Compared to cotton fiber, "kapok" fiber has a lower cellulose content and a higher lignin content. It has also been stated that "kapok" fiber is the lightest fiber in the world, and compared to cotton fiber, "kapok" fiber is six times lighter. Traditionally, these fibers have been used as filler in pillows, mattresses and upholstered furniture.
La pelusa sedosa que queda en árbol rodeando las semillas, posteriormente es dispersada por el viento. Químicamente, la pelusa es una mezcla de principalmente lignina y celulosa. En comparación con la fibra de algodón, la fibra de "ceiba" tiene un menor contenido de celulosa y un mayor contenido de lignina. Asimismo, se ha afirmado que la fibra de "ceiba" es la más ligera del mundo, y comparando con la fibra del algodón, la de la "ceiba" es seis veces más ligera. Tradicionalmente, esas fibras se han utilizado como relleno en almohadas, colchones y muebles tapizados.
That the seeds within the mass of fibers are dispersed by the wind is the adaptation of the "kapok" tree to propagate its species.
El que las semillas dentro de la masa de fibras sean dispersadas por el viento, es la adaptación del árbol "ceiba" para propagar su especie.

The seeds are about 4 to 6 millimeters in diameter, hairless (glabrous), and dark brown or black in color. It should be noted that phytochemical analysis of seed oil have found several bioactive compounds, including phenolic compounds such as flavonoids, which are a class of antioxidant agents that act as free radical scavengers and are also involved in retardation oxidative degradation of lipids. In this sense, it is known that there is a strong relationship between phenolic content and antioxidant activity through a scavenging or chelating process, so the seeds may play a preventive role in cancer and heart disease.
Las semillas tienen casi entre 4 y 6 milímetros de diámetro, no tienen pelos (son glabras) y son de color marrón oscuro o negro. Cabe destacar que en análisis fitoquímicos realizados al aceite de las semillas se han encontrado diversos compuestos bioactivos, entre ellos compuestos fenólicos, como los flavonoides, que son una clase de agentes antioxidantes que actúan como eliminadores de radicales libres y que también participan en el retraso de la degradación oxidativa de los lípidos. En tal sentido, es conocido que existe una fuerte relación entre el contenido fenólico y la actividad antioxidante a través de un proceso de barrido o quelación, por lo que las semillas pueden desempeñar un papel preventivo en el cáncer y las enfermedades cardíacas.
At the site where I found the tree, the silky fluff with seeds on the ground was more than 30 meters away from the tree.
En el sitio donde encontré el árbol, la pelusa sedosa con semillas en el suelo se encontraba a una distancia de más de 30 metros del árbol.
