On one occasion I saw a treehopper of the genus Membracis and captured photographs of it. The treehopper was the species Membracis foliatafasciata of the tribe Membracini of the subfamily Membracinae, the latter included in the family Membracidae. I accompanied the photographs with general information on various aspects and can be read here.

On this occasion, I show photographs of another treehopper, also of the genus Membracis, but I did not manage to determine the species; the species is found in a plant of the genus Coccoloba. Among species, some are very similar and can be differentiated by coloration patterns and types of bands on the pronotum. For example there is one species that is totally black (Membracis foliatafusca) and others that are also black but have white bands that differ in patterns. The following photograph is of the treehopper that I could not identify and then I show the one of the species Membracis foliatafasciata.

Between the two you can clearly see the differences in the patterns. I clarify that in Membracis foliatafasciata the color that contrasts with the patterns is usually black but sometimes the host plant can affect the color lightening it.

The treehopper that I did not identify has a white band on the front that is different from that of Membracis foliatafasciata, but is very similar to that of the species Membracis foliata, Membracis obliquifasciata and Membracis dorsata, however, these three species with their similar band and contrasting black color, differ in that they have other white bands or spots besides the front one.

This, like other treehoppers, are related to cicadas, but have evolved a peculiar morphological structure known as a "helmet" that expands dorsally over most of the length of the body and has diversified to extremes within the family Membracidae, conveying most of the diversity of shapes of the treehoppers. The various forms, colors and textures of the helmet can mimic natural elements, from thorns or seeds to animal droppings or aggressive ants. Without the helmet, treehoppers are very similar to cicadas. The helmet is shared exclusively by all species of treehopper, indicating that it appeared very early in the evolutionary lineage of the treehoppers.

The anatomical nature and evolutionary origin of the helmet remain controversial. Although most studies consider the helmet to be merely an expansion of the pronotum, that is, an enlarged dorsal face (tergite) of the first thoracic segment (T1), it has been suggested that it might be an appendage of T1. This statement has been rejected by several researchers, but there are also others who consider that the "helmet" of the treehoppers is actually an appendage, a wing serial homologue on the first thoracic segment.

One thing I noticed about this treehopper unlike the other one, on the other occasion with the species Membracis foliatafasciata in which I only saw one, was that there was not only one, but several forming a group.

Even on the plant where they were there were also exoskeletons of nymphs. I did not find any living nymphs, only discarded exoskeletons of nymphs that were moved by the wind.

Arthropods are covered by a hard exoskeleton that physically and chemically protects the body. However, due of its limited elasticity, the exoskeleton prevents continuous growth, so most arthropod species grow by shedding their hard cuticle, a phenomenon known as molting. Before molting, a new exoskeleton forms under the old one. A newly developed exoskeleton has extensive furrows that enable it to expand into complex three-dimensional structures when the furrows are extended and the later extension process is a simple physical transition that does not involve cytological activities, such as cell division and migration. Thus, the final structure is uniquely determined when primordial morphogenesis has been completed. Considering the diversity of arthropod exoskeleton morphology, this "morphogenesis via folding and extension" may be able to form various final three-dimensional structures shapes.

One of the most extreme examples of three-dimensional structures formed by "folding and extension" is the helmet (or enlarged pronotum) of the treehoppers. The three-dimensional shapes of the helmets of treehoppers are extremely diverse, including branched TV antenna-like, roof-like, crescent-shaped or more complex C-shaped, elongated cylindrical, spiny to forked or ant-mimicking shapes. These complex three-dimensional shapes appear at the time of molting from final instar nymph to adult. In a short period of time, both the size and shape of the helmet are dramatically transformed at the time of molting. Considering this "transformation," that is, the the emergence of the adult helmet, it is likely that specific patterns of folds and furrows are already developed in the helmet primordium located below the cuticle of the last instar nymph.

Something I also observed in several of these treehoppers, unlike the other one, was that they jumped very fast when I sometimes touched them. Their jumps are propelled by a catapult mechanism.

They follow a sequence and pattern of leg movements. Jumping is powered by a rapid depression of the hind trochanters (a trochanter is the small second segment of an insect's leg, located between the coxa and the femur). The first movements of the hind legs are depression of the trochanters followed by extension of the tibiae. These movements accelerate the body to average take-off velocities of 2.1 to 2.7 meters per second. The front and middle legs lose contact with the ground before take-off and, although they flap their wings, it is the propulsive movements of the hind legs that enable the treehopper to become airborne. Only the hind legs propel the body in the final stages of the jump.

In scientific literature that I reviewed, it is indicated that generally in jumps the wings remain folded and, therefore, do not contribute to takeoff, but sometimes they can open the wings and flap them before takeoff.

Finally, a video of the treehoppers I saw, where you can watch several individuals walking, discarded exoskeletons of nymphs and several of them jumping. At the end of the video, one jumps from one of my fingers and opens the wings before take-off; I know it happened because when opening the wings the abdomen is visible and the hind legs still remain on my finger.
