Spring orchids🌏🌺 / Orquideas de primavera🤓👩🏻‍🏫 (En-Es)

Greetings friends of this lovely community and fellow lovers of natural sciences! Today I bring you a short but quite interesting and educational post. We're going to conduct a small investigation into the number of orchid species we can find at the beginning of spring, and thus appreciate just how rich in biodiversity a small space can be. Enjoy the experience!🏔️🌺

As you can see, I conducted a small study in an area of 10.44 square meters, which is relatively small, but you will be surprised how in a place called (ecological corridor) which is nothing more than a refuge surrounded by urban areas where local flora and fauna are protected, and this gives us a clue of the great importance it has for Lisbon.🙇🏻‍♀️🏔️

The characteristics of the location have everything necessary for the growth of different orchid species. The soils of the parish of Vialonga, where the reserve is located, have 20 hectares dedicated to the preservation of the species, and being so rich in biodiversity, there are projects from universities and technical schools that come here to carry out ecological measurement work.🧭🧑🏻‍🎓

The landscape is dominated by 80% species of (Pinus pinea) a species of stone pine that is quite common in the landscape of Portugal, or rather the entire Iberian Peninsula. We could also see some specimens of Aleppo and Wild Olive, also native to the area. It's incredible that we are at more than 200 meters above sea level, an interesting fact for orchids, many would think that they are not high-altitude plants.🌏👩🏻‍🏫

As you can see, this species is very popular in Portugal and can be found throughout almost the entire country. Its flowering period runs from the end of February to the end of May. These species try to avoid the summer heat; in Portugal, temperatures in some areas exceed 40 degrees Celsius, and an orchid doesn't have the capacity to sustain the energy expenditure required for flowering and would lose a lot of water during that time.🌺🤓

They prefer meadow-type soils, rarely surrounded by trees or tall shrubs, preferring shady areas but can grow in direct sunlight. We are practically at the altitude limit, as we rarely see them above 350 meters. However, I believe I have seen them in Arrábida, another park at over 500 meters. As you can see in the data table, they do not tolerate temperatures above -0 degrees.🥼😉

Now we see another beautiful species called Orchis italica. In Portugal, it's known as the "flower of the perched monkeys," I suppose because of the style of its flowers; it's clearly an inflorescence. This one prefers more calcareous soils, its distribution is more localized, and for that reason, it's considered "uncommon." Like other orchids, it's terrestrial, and this one, like the previous one, is from areas with little vegetation.😉🤓

We've already dedicated a section to this species; I created a post about a valley we visited in Arrábida and described several specimens. This one here still starts flowering in winter, at the end of January, and it's much more common! For more information, visit my other posts.📸🧭

Finding this species surprised me and indicates that the area has some very interesting nutrients, because I don't usually find it in many places. It thrives in poor soils, in areas of pasture and open vegetation. Its distribution is also limited, and we only find it in the central part of the country; it doesn't grow in the north! It flowers from February to the end of April, also avoiding high summer temperatures.🌺🏔️

How are you, dear friend @biologistbrito?

What a brilliant idea, starting spring with some scientific research!

It's incredible that you found all these orchid species in a space of just ten square meters.

Thank you so much for sharing this refreshing experience.

Have a wonderful spring!
