Why visit the Odrinhas Archaeological Museum?🏺🚩 /Por que visitar el Museo Arqueologico de Odrinhas?🌎👨🏻‍🏫

Personally, museums like these are essential for our society, they keep us cultured and teach us much more about the important aspects of the civilizations that inhabited our country in ancient times. The Roman Museum of Odrinhas is designed to capture the attention and visit of a wide social group, aimed at the youngest members of the family as well as adults. The museum is free thanks to the fact that the municipal chamber covers the costs of the visits to promote local tourism, another reason to leave our attendance at the museum. By the way, I'll leave you the coordinates: (38.8871°N 9.3663°W)🧔🏻‍♂️🧑🏻‍🎓🧭

The museum was opened in 1999 and has a vast documented and registered collection of over a thousand objects from all eras, creating a chronological concept from prehistory to our time. The museum space is comprised of a collection of glass, ceramic, stone, and even metal objects! Where did all these objects come from? An interesting question to answer, all the objects on display in this museum are the product of countless excavations that have been carried out throughout the Sintra area, and others have been donated to the museum by people.🧔🏻‍♂️🚩🌎

We just entered the museum and came across these objects. Some of them are objects used for different types of gambling, such as an ivory dice, and this upper part of a marble column with a decoration that presents a vegetation theme, all dating from the 2nd-1st century BC and the 1st-2nd century AD. I am fascinated by how these objects reflect the interest of human beings in discovering what cultures were like over the millennia. Up to this point we can do the tour independently, but to enter the other rooms we need to go with a guide. I think they leave every hour. You can ask at the reception.

It was founded in the medieval era👨🏻‍🏫

Incredible, despite the fact that the museum was founded in 1999, a character named (Dom Diego de Sousa) had already begun collecting objects from the Romanesque era and placed them on display in a chapel within the property, being the first person to begin the collection in the year 1490 to 1495, in 1955 another Portuguese scientist named Joaquim Fontes was in charge of carrying out a series of excavations in Sintra to enrich the museum's exhibition.🧭📸

A trip to the past🏺🚩 /Un viaje al pasado🌎👨🏻‍🏫

We continue our tour of the museum and see some structures that were part of the ancient Roman palace that was in this area, currently there are only two pillars of a temple, behind the museum there is a small Roman villa which we will visit at the end of the tour, the objects that I show you below are part of the era of (high empire) the era of the high empire is between 27 before Christ and 235 after Christ🏺🌎

Our guide told us that in the area of Sintra several tombstones or stone objects were collected for funeral purposes or to worship some deity, when we see documentaries about Roman customs we see that they mostly cremated the bodies instead of burying them, however burial was also a fairly common practice, however until the 4th century AD in Portugal there are only records of the practice of cremation and a tombstone was placed in honor of that person with the name and sometimes the date of the "burial" was placed.🧭👨🏻‍🏫

This set of coins belongs to the late empire with the exception of two examples from the 2nd century AD. It is believed that in the place where these coins were collected there was an altar, so it is believed that for hundreds of years it was used as a sacred place where coins were thrown in requests to the deities.🧭👨🏻‍🏫

In the museum we have the option of seeing some sarcophragms from the time of the Vigoths and later the medieval era, already in this period from the 2nd to the 15th century, our guide explained to us that it is very noticeable how the Romans decorated the tombstones with great effort while already in the medieval era they normally only placed a cross or another symbol making the grave something simpler and not so ceremonious, clearly not applicable to high-ranking characters or of good family caste.

Remains of a Roman villa and temple🏺🚩 /UResto de una villa y templo romano🌎👨🏻‍🏫

My favorite part is when we finish the tour and see this Roman villa that is next to the museum and that for centuries was inhabited by various people in Odrinhas, it is believed that the records of their establishment in the villa date back to the 2nd century BC and they were here until the fall of the Roman Empire by the barbarians possibly between the 4th and 5th centuries. We see a mill, several house structures and a drainage system, as well as a small fountain in the center of the town. Many objects were collected from this villa that are on display in the museum.👨🏻‍🏫🧭

This is without a doubt my favorite part of the tour. When we arrive at the ruins we can see a decorative ceramic mosaic that dates back to the Roman era. Imagine being able to admire such a decorative object that is hundreds of years old. Normally these types of decorations are placed in squares or public places or inside the house of an important person.🧭👨🏻‍🏫

Death in combat🏺🚩 /Muerte en combate🌎👨🏻‍🏫

This is another iconic piece of the museum full of mysteries and history. It is a skull that was discovered in a grave in Odrinhas which has a combat wound which suggests that due to the type of wound it was a soldier who died in combat in the medieval era.🌎👨🏻‍🏫
