Is it a microscopic green banana?🧠 / Una banana verde?🔬

Hello science addicts, today I prepared a small class about (Desmidiales), they are an order of green algae in which more than 6,000 species have been recorded worldwide! As you can see, make a home algae "cultivation" and wait a few days until the conditions are ideal for the growth of some "closterium". In my post we are going to identify the species, describe its ecology and some incredible data that modern science He still can't explain about these species!🧑‍🏫🧠

What are the Desmidials🔬🧠/ Que son las Desmidiales🧑‍🏫

For this experiment I collected standing water and let it "settle" for 14 days receiving indirect sunlight through a window! and with a dropper randomly collect water at various depths to get some (Desmidiales) but really what are they? I mentioned in the previous paragraph that they are generally freshwater algae, and that more than 6000 species have been described, they are unicellular conjugates, their main characteristic is that they are divided by an "isthmus" creating two compartments! and we'll see in the picture!🧑‍🏫🧫🧠

Identifying the species🔬🧠/ Identificando la especie🧑‍🏫

It was not very difficult to identify this algae which, due to its characteristics, is undoubtedly Closterium moniliferum, why? well the bibliographical reference tells us: "it presents chloroplasts with about ten lamellae" between 6-7 pyrenoids that are: (protein structures that are observed in plastids of algae), they are not scattered throughout the "body" on the contrary they are seen in row shape! Their size varies between 150-450 microns, they are common in still and eutrophic waters! I mean "contaminated"🧠🧫🧑‍🏫

What are Closteriums?🔬🧠/Que son Closterium?🧑‍🏫

Applying coloring🧠

While I was carrying out the experiment I decided to put dye to see the behavior of the algae before these compounds but nothing really happened, I thought it would have somewhere but it didn't! I have to admit that if I achieved a better result to photograph each individual with better details, remember that it is a species of only 150 microns so when doing 100x they still do not look very big!🧠🌍

"Closterium are a genus of algae, they have an elongated and cylindrical appearance, they look like a crescent moon and very often they have two symmetrical semicells individually", the vacuoles are quite visible at the ends of each semicell!🧑‍🏫🔬

Curious about these algae?🔬🧠/Curiosidad de estas algas?🧑‍🏫

At each end of the Closterium we see how many proteins move inside the vacuole (Brownian movement) that are actually composed of barium sulfate crystals but until now science has not been able to explain what it is for! Its reproduction can be sexual by conjugation or asexual by a mother cell by partition! It is normal in the microscopic kingdom from time to time algae despite being able to reproduce asexually will always choose to perform a conjugation to always exist an exchange of "genetic material".🌏🔬🧑‍🏫

Morphology🔬🧠/Morfologia🧑‍🏫

We see the center where the genetic material and the aforementioned pyrenoids are stored.🔬🧑‍🏫

Biologists infer that conjugated algae are the most beautiful on the planet and it is quite a spectacle to see them under the microscope! they have not been described in marine water! half of the algae is strictly divided into two symmetrical half cells! the cell wall is made up of 2-3 layers of cellulose and pectin! They present pores two microns in size through which a compound that allows movement is secreted!🧫🧠

We conclude that it is not a banana? xd🔬🧠/Concluimos que no es una banana? xD🧑‍🏫

hehe of course it's not a banana but I think that in the microscopic world these would be green bananas because of their great resemblance! It was a great experience, I hope you learned something interesting today!😁
