Hello friends of Hive, today we go to space // Hola amigos de Hive, hoy nos vamos al espacio

Often when talking about the Hubble Space Telescope, the first thing to stand out are the spectacular images it offers of space. But, without powering up, the devices and instruments onboard would not work, which would mean that scientists could no longer see the universe in more detail.

Therefore, in this post, I direct attention to the production and storage of energy of this spacecraft, such as solar panels and batteries.

A bit of Hubble // Un poco del Hubble

Hubble has been in orbit since 24 April 1990 at the outer edges of the atmosphere as a project of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA). It is named after the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, considered the father of observational cosmology.

Scientists have been able to see the Universe in more detail and based on these, they have cleared up unknowns about the birth of the Universe with the Big Bang, reinforcing the principle that the structure of the Universe is independent of the direction in which it is viewed, among other things.

Energía que Alimenta a Hubble // Energy that powers Hubble

The Hubble needs electricity for its scientific instruments and devices on board, which is supplied by the electric power system, within which are the solar panels and batteries with their supporting electronics.

Its first two solar panels were thin and flexible Silicon (Si) cells of about 2. 3 meters by 11. 9 meters spread out at their sides. Each panel had a blanket of solar cells that delivered 2,800 W, developed by ESA. In 1996, they were replaced by others equipped with thermal shields on the rods that held the photoelectric cell sheets.

This replacement was made when it was determined that the flexibility of the original panels caused vibrations as they unfolded and folded in and out of sunlight, effects that were evidenced by the miscapture of images. At the time, he was harshly criticized, questioning Hubble’s ability to capture clear images.

>Then in 2002 the panels were replaced again by others that are a third smaller than their predecessors, using solar cells of Gallium Arseniide (GaAs), which have rigid frames of Lithium (Li) and Aluminium (Al) alloy and produce 20% more energy. In addition, the matrices, being smaller, reduce the amount of atmospheric drag found by the telescope.

Hubble stores the energy delivered by solar cells in its batteries, for use when the Earth eclipses the Sun, which lasts 36 minutes of each 97-minute orbit. Or, when the orientation of the solar panels is not appropriate. Six Nickel-Hydrogen (NIH2) rechargeable batteries are available for this purpose.

These have provided electric power to the telescope during its night orbit since its launch in 1990. That means they have been operating for 30 years, just completed and will continue their functions.

Their service life is also due to a team of engineers who constantly monitor the amount of current flowing to them, along with their temperature during charging cycles, making adjustments when necessary to ensure optimal performance.

Conclusion // Conclusión

Since its inception, the Hubble Space Telescope has used solar panels whose function is to convert sunlight directly into electricity needed for the entire spacecraft, and when the Earth eclipses the Sun, the batteries operate. Up there, except it’s in space, it could look like any system that gets energy from the Sun on Earth.

However, new scientific and technological proposals have been tested at Hubble to improve each of them, and thus their use. Such as how to solve the vibrations detected during the deployment and folding of the original solar panels, the size of the current cells and their contribution to reducing the amount of atmospheric drag the telescope finds. Cases, which have been used in other space missions.

Also, it is evident that the close collaboration between man and machine can make the difference.
