Hello, Friends of Hive, it is a pleasure to be with you again presenting topics related to technology.
Hola Amigos de Hive un gusto estar nuevamente con ustedes presentando tópicos relacionados con la tecnología.
This time, I will focus your attention on a topic that has brought friction to the ICT world for years because there are still hopes that they will avoid or minimize the environmental problems they generate.
Esta vez enfocaré su atención a un tema que por años ha traído fricciones al mundo de las TIC, porque siguen las esperanzas para que eviten o minimicen los problemas ambientales que ellas generan.
For this post, I relied on segments of a conference entitled "ICT and Sustainable Development: The Evident and the Implicit" that I gave a few years ago in response to an invitation to the Congress and Exhibition of Information Technology and Communication in 2013 (Exponetcom 2013).
Para este post me apoyé en segmentos de una conferencia titulada “TIC y Desarrollo Sustentable: Lo Evidente y Lo Implícito” que diserté hace unos años atendiendo una invitación al Congreso y Exposición de Tecnología de la Información y Comunicación en el 2013 (Exponetcom 2013).
Eight years have passed, but what I said on that occasion is still reflected today, there are advances and some pending, so I invite you to read Digital Technology and Sustainable Development and act accordingly.

To introduce the topic, I quote Fritjof Capra from his book The Turning Point:

The advance and massive use of digital technologies have favored and marked social transformations, both positively and negatively.
El avance y uso masivo de las Tecnologías Digitales han favorecido y marcado las transformaciones sociales, tanto positivas como negativamente.
What is not in question is that the vast majority of them have traveled a not very pleasant road to be better prepared to reduce their impact on the environment, thanks to recent progress and undoubtedly to greater awareness.
Lo que no se cuestiona, es que en su gran mayoría han recorrido un camino no muy placentero para estar mejor preparadas en la reducción de su impacto sobre el ambiente, gracias a los últimos progresos logrados y sin duda a una mayor conciencia.
However, efforts towards the achievement of technologies favoring Sustainable Development (SD) continue.
Sin embargo, siguen los esfuerzos hacia el logro de tecnologías favorecedoras del Desarrollo Sustentable (DS).
Supporters of SD continue to invite developers, researchers, and innovators from other branches of knowledge, other than the traditional ones involved with SD, to form a multi- and trans-disciplinary front, which will help foster a commitment to sustainability, as well as work towards a fair and equitable digital world (The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, 2020; Yánez et al., 2013; Yánez & Zavarce, 2011).
Los que respaldan el DS continúan invitando a desarrolladores, investigadores e innovadores de otras ramas del conocimiento, distintas a las tradicionales involucradas con el DS, a formar un frente multi y transdisciplinario, que ayude a fomentar el compromiso con la sostenibilidad, así como también trabajar hacia una justo y equitativo mundo digital (The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, 2020; Yánez et al., 2013).

To give fluidity to the reading, concepts whose meaning and objective are to provide solutions for survival on this planet are highlighted.

The first of these is Sustainable Development, as highlighted by Dr. Miguel A. Briceño still in force:

Sustainable Development is premised on a deeper knowledge of the interactions between the economic system and the biophysical systems, which are the basis for decisions following ecological criteria and long-term viability...this is supported by academic and research teams, as well as trained professionals, who can articulate the work of universities, research centers, professional associations and business associations with the needs of the reconversion of industry, services and primary activities. (1998, pp. 39-40)
El Desarrollo Sustentable tiene como premisa el conocimiento más profundo de las interacciones entre el sistema económico y los sistemas biofísicos, que fundamentan las decisiones acordes a criterios de carácter ecológico y de viabilidad a largo plazo…esto se soporta con cuadros académicos y de investigación, así como de profesionales capacitados, que logren articular el quehacer de las universidades, centros de investigación, colegios de profesionales y asociaciones empresariales con las necesidades de la reconversión de la industria, los servicios y las actividades primarias. In turn, Briceño (1998, p. 40) says:

It is in technology where the hopes to avoid the environmental problems generated by the massive use of technology rest and it is engineering who has the obligation to achieve its application in a concept of Sustainable Development.

Briceño urges engineering to take decisively its responsibility in the revision and updating of its foundations because it is one of the professions most closely linked to technological development and production activities.
Briceño emplaza a la ingeniería a tomar decididamente su responsabilidad en la revisión y actualización de sus fundamentos, porque es una de las profesiones más vinculada al desarrollo tecnológico y las actividades productivas.
This is an issue, which I take as a professional north for the research and projects that I have carried out.
Asunto, que profesionalmente tomo como norte para las investigaciones y proyectos que he llevado adelante.
In addition, there is Green IT (Green Information Technology) also known as Green Computing, which according to the TIC Portal, a site supported by the European Knowledge Center for Information Technology (EKCIT) is: :
Además, está la Tecnología Verde o Green IT (Green Information Technology) también conocido como Computación Verde o Green Computing, que según lo manifestado en TIC Portal, sitio soportado por el El Centro Europeo del Conocimiento para la Tecnología de la Información (EKCIT: European Knowledge Center for Information Technology) es:
Collective name for all environmentally responsible ways of working within the ICT sector. The goal of Green IT is to limit the negative impact of ICT solutions on the environment.
Nombre colectivo para todas las formas de trabajo responsables ecológicamente dentro del sector de las TIC. El objetivo de Green IT es limitar el impacto negativo de las soluciones TIC para el medio ambiente.
From the existing link of the above concepts, it is possible to extract situations such as the continuous spread of ICTs regarding their great contribution to the reduction of energy consumption in many areas of daily life.
Del vínculo existente de los conceptos anteriores, se puede extraer situaciones como la que propicia la continua propagación de las TIC respecto a su gran contribución a la reducción del consumo de energía en muchas áreas de la vida cotidiana.
Moreover, indoors, they have worked to optimize energy production, transportation, and consumption, as indicated by different sources (Castillo & Melin, 2021; Sabban, 2021; The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, 2020).
Además, puertas adentro, han trabajado para optimizar la producción, transporte y consumo de energía, como lo indican diferentes fuentes (Castillo y Melin, 2021; Sabban, 2021; The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, 2020).
However, ICT infrastructures continue to expand in capacity, scope and need to become more efficient, which is often a sticking point that leads to confrontation.
No obstante, las infraestructuras de la TIC continúan expandiéndose en capacidad, alcance y necesitan ser más eficientes, siendo este un punto álgido que a menudo produce confrontaciones.

In the last decades, from a technological point of view, some solutions have been proposed to contribute to SD and one of the most outstanding ones is Green Computing, as defined above, and its main ideas are shown in the following figure.

The main ideas of Green Computing include the advancement of environmentally friendly production practices, energy-efficient computers, the use of energy harvesting technologies, and improved disposal and recycling procedures (Sabban, 2021). This has set the table for incorporating novel approaches such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Las ideas principales de la Computación Verde incluyen el progreso de prácticas de producción ecológicas, computadoras de consumo energético eficiente, el uso de tecnologías de recolección de energía y la mejora de los procedimientos de eliminación y reciclaje (Sabban, 2021). Lo cual ha servido la mesa para incorporar enfoques novedosos como la Inteligencia Artificial (IA).
Thus, Green Computing focuses its attention on technologies for energy efficiency in ICT systems. It provides a review of technologies aimed at keeping energy consumption at the lowest possible level, covering different levels: from processor performance to data center operation. Coining the concept of Sustainable Green Technologies.
Entonces, la Computación Verde enfoca su atención a las tecnologías para la eficiencia energética en los sistemas de las TIC. Proporciona una revisión de tecnologías orientadas a mantener el consumo de energía al nivel más bajo posible, abarcando diferentes niveles: desde el desempeño del procesador, hasta el funcionamiento de los centros de datos. Acuñando el concepto Tecnologías Verdes Sostenible.
This category includes the technological infrastructure that companies use daily, such as all electronic devices, data centers, or industrial machinery.
Esta categoría incluye la infraestructura tecnológica que las empresas utilizan a diario, como todos los dispositivos electrónicos, los centros de datos o la maquinaria industrial.

Big Data, digital platforms, and AI pose a fabric presenting opportunities that drive transformations that help to build a more equitable world capable of addressing the climate crisis and global sustainability challenges (Luers et al., 2020; The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, 2020).
El Big Data, las plataformas digitales y la IA plantean un tejido presentando oportunidades que impulsan transformaciones que ayudan a para construir un mundo más equitativo capaz de afrontar la crisis climática y los retos de la sostenibilidad mundial (Luers et al., 2020; The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, 2020).
On the other hand, Castillo and Melin (2021) emphasize that intelligent computing techniques when interacting with Green Computing become very important. Their results record that a good number of scientific papers have applied fuzzy systems, neural network models, genetic algorithms, and swarm intelligence to different types of problems in Green Computing.
Por su parte, Castillo y Melin (2021) destacan que las técnicas de computación inteligentes al interactuar con la Computación Verde se vuelven muy importantes. Sus resultados registran que una buena cantidad de escritos científicos han aplicado sistemas difusos, modelos de redes neuronales, algoritmos genéticos e inteligencia de enjambre a diferentes tipos de problemas en la Computación Verde.
It is no secret what is being experienced on a daily basis as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic, where technology has played an important role, not only because of teleworking, which also has its downsides, but also because of the incursion of automated medical diagnostics.
Para nadie es un secreto lo que se está viviendo a diario producto de la pandemia del Covid 19, donde la tecnología ha jugado un papel importante, no solo por el teletrabajo, que también tiene sus bemoles, sino la incursión del diagnóstico médico automatizado.
But, we must not forget that Technology for Sustainability manifests itself in the design of solutions and/or devices based on eco-efficiency, i.e. guaranteeing manufacturing and operational safety while reducing their environmental impact.
Pero, no debemos olvidar que la Tecnología para la Sustentabilidad se manifiesta en el diseño de soluciones y/o dispositivos basados en la ecoeficiencia, es decir garantizan seguridad de fabricación y funcionamiento reduciendo al mismo tiempo su impacto medioambiental.
The key is to "produce more with less". Also called non-polluting or environmentally friendly technologies, those goods and services that improve the quality of air, water, soil or seek solutions to problems related to waste.
La clave es “producir más con menos”. También denominadas tecnologías no contaminantes o ecológicas, aquellos bienes y servicios que mejoran la calidad del aire, del agua, del suelo o que buscan soluciones a los problemas relacionados con los residuos.

Todavía queda camino
While it is true that digital technologies are a focus of great business opportunities, it should be clear that they bring with them an added value, involving initiatives and strategies that have and should reduce the impact on the environment, as established by Green Computing.
Si bien es cierto, que las tecnologías digitales son un foco de grandes oportunidades de negocios, se debe tener claro que traen consigo un valor agregado, involucrando iniciativas y estrategias que tienen y deben reducir el impacto en el medioambiente, como lo establece la Computación Verde.
There is a digital pathway initiated with the use of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Emergent Computing, and telecommunications, which even with all the efforts to conceive environmentally friendly technologies are still vulnerable and carbon consuming.
Hay una senda digital iniciada con la utilización de la Inteligencia Artificial, Big Data, Computación Emergente y lo relacionado a las telecomunicaciones, que aun con todos los esfuerzos para concebir tecnologías favorecedoras del ambiente siguen siendo vulnerables y consumen carbono.
There is a digital pathway initiated with the use of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Emergent Computing, and telecommunications, which even with all the efforts to conceive environmentally friendly technologies are still vulnerable and carbon consuming.
Siguen existiendo retos tecnológicos y sociales como lo relacionado al consumo de energía del hardware y software, ecodiseño de productos, obsolescencia programada, basura electrónica, explotación de minerales, coexistencia de tecnologías verdes y no sustentables, formación de ciudadanos, que deben ser conocidos y articulados a gran escala, sin establecer prejuicios tecnológicos.
Although the terms allude to the color green, we must also refer to the color blue. It is more extensive and provider of life on the planet.
Aun cuando los términos aluden al color verde, también debemos referirnos al azul. Es más extenso y proveedor de la vida en el planeta.
