General information on the management of planting density and weed control in the Chinese ocumo crop (Colocasia esculenta L.)

The agricultural crop Chinese ocumo (Colocasia esculenta L.) is qualified as one of the main food resources in tropical countries, since this crop is considered an alternative for the production of carbohydrates, and even though it represents an important food option for the country within the tubers, this crop has not been taken into account for technical assistance or financial aid by official agencies or universities, because it is only managed in a traditional way by small producers.

▶ For optimal crop management, it is necessary to carry out very important tasks such as weeding, which is done after the third month and it is advisable to leave only the most vigorous sprout, it is deduced that if this work is not done the plants develop a large proliferation of offspring that produce large tillers, which will affect the development of cormels.

Weed control is also an important task, since this crop is very sensitive to competition with weeds during the first 3 or 4 months of growth, when the leaves begin to expand; with respect to hilling, it is traditionally done three months after planting.

Planting density has a very significant effect on crop productivity, but although increasing planting density can benefit the development and productivity of the crop, it is not always advisable; this will depend on the conditions to adequately attend to the development of a greater number of plants per hectare. The distance between plants should not be less than 30 cm, as this limits the development of the corm and the plant itself.

On the other hand, it is necessary to increase the production levels of ocumo as a crop, and for this it is essential to carry out good agronomic practices that help improve its performance, such as fertilization, weeding, hilling and an adequate planting density to ensure good plant development and therefore good production.

This crop can be very well exploited in many areas of the country because it is a plant that adapts perfectly to high humidity conditions. For this reason, the present research aims to evaluate the effect of planting density on vegetative growth variables in Chinese octupus plants (Colocasia esculenta L.).

Cultivation in the traditional way is very tiring, and the Chinese people are known for their struggle and hard work.
Good luck to the producers!

These plant is very common in my area and a common main ingredient in our diet.

Almost all part of this plant can be eaten.
I far prefer the root crop over the leaf. I love adding it to a pork stew - yummy. 😋

Thanks for sharing.
