Greetings dear friends of the Hive platform, welcome back to my blog. A few weeks ago I made a post dedicated to a lepidopteran of the family Nymphalidae, which was intended to describe the most striking characteristics of the genus Eueides click here (Esp). In the present installment we will meet a very similar butterfly belonging to the genus Agraulis, so I invite you to continue reading the following article.

The family Nymphalidae, a group of insects of the order Lepidoptera composed of more than 4,000 species. This family of diurnal butterflies is characterized by its intermediate size and great diversity of colorful colors; their larvae are often considered pests in a wide variety of crops, and many have aposematic colors that indicate that their ingestion can be harmful to the organism.

Within this group belonging to the suborder glossata, is one of the most beautiful butterflies that exists, this is none other than the Danaus plexippus or monarch butterfly as it is known by various cultures. This butterfly is widely studied in the scientific field due to the massive migrations that take place at certain times of the year and the toxicity of its caterpillars, clearly given by various compounds that have the plants on which they feed.

Many of these lepidoptera are usually confused with each other, this is because their colors and sizes are practically identical, having only slight differences in the patterns present in their wings, so for an optimal identification and classification it is required to observe the details that each species presents. This confusion is more frequent in specimens belonging to the tribe heliconiini of the family Nymphalidae.

Lepidoptera 2 english.png

The aforementioned tribe has more than 100 species spread over an estimated 11 genera, the most popular being those comprising the genera Dione, Eueides, Heliconius and Agraulis. The latter will be the one shown in the following article, being the specimen Agraulis vanillae the only one of its genus, which makes it a monotypic species.

In various cultures this lepidopteran is known as the "mirror butterfly", a nickname attributed to the various patterns under its wings that resemble glass. This characteristic facilitates its identification as long as its long wings can be seen while it is perched on a plant or surface.

Lepidoptera 3.png

The predominant coloration of the posterior region of its wings is orange, resembling to a great extent its relatives Eueides isabella, Dione juno, Vanessa cardui or the monarch butterfly Danaus plexippus. However, each specimen has wing patterns of different shapes, colors and distribution, which places them in different tribes and genera.

During its juvenile instars (caterpillar), this lepidopteran usually has as a favorite plant species the genus Passiflora, where it has some importance since its populations can become a pest and affect plant yields, resulting in economic losses for the agricultural producer. You can see the whole biological cycle of this species here (Esp)

Lepidoptera 4 partes 1 english.png

Being a member of the insecta class, its main characteristics do not differ from other hexapods, so it has its typical body divided into 3 regions (head, thorax and abdomen), in addition to having its 3 pairs of legs. The lower part of its abdomen goes between white and beige colors, while the lower part of its wings is much less striking by not having a color that predominates, as if it happens in the back of these membranous limbs in which that beautiful and classic orange color is appreciated.

Lepidoptera 4 partes english.png

This invertebrate belongs to the suborder glossata, a group composed of those lepidoptera that have an elongated mouthparts with which they can suck the nectar from flowers, while this organ is not used it is rolled up and hidden inside a cavity, all this mouthparts are known as proboscis, so they only have jaws when they are caterpillars.

The compound eyes of these insects are made up of more than 20,000 ommatidium, which gives them excellent vision to find their food source, flee from predators, and also to capture UV rays and guide them during sunlight hours. Nocturnal Lepidoptera usually use moonlight to coordinate their flight, while diurnal species use the sun.

Lepidoptera 5 english.png

These butterflies measure less than 4 cm in length, its morphology and its anatomy in general make it a very subtle and delicate organism. The antennae are extremely thin and have the shape of a golf club, its eyes have a light green color which is given by the pigmented cells that separate each of its ommatidia, and in various regions of its body has orange lines that accompany the characteristic white of its thorax and abdomen.

On the other hand, the black patterns distributed on its wings have several geometric figures that are not very well defined, being more striking those on its front wings (very close to the head), which are 2 black circles with white details, making it look as if it had 2 more eyes on its wings.

Lepidoptera 6.png

Despite their fragile appearance, butterflies in general are excellent fliers and can efficiently fulfill their role as pollinators. While this specimen is an adult, it is not a problem for humans, nor is it a natural enemy to plant species, it is only during its caterpillar phase that it can be of concern due to the relative ease with which it can defoliate plants. Although very rarely their populations become a problem, even, there are plants of the genus Passiflora that to avoid the proliferation of this type of lepidoptera, develops yellow spots on the leaf blades (leaves), this makes the butterflies Agraulis believe that there are already eggs in these areas, so the latter avoids placing more of their future generations in that plant.
